Sarah Vaughan brings an almost chameleon-like presence to this album, which encompasses a decidedly — almost defiantly — contemporary repertory. Her gospel approach to “Imagine” could only have delighted John Lennon at the time, while for “Inner City Blues” she embraces a fiercely soulful jazz approach, the horn accompaniment in particular romping over the tune as much as she does.Read More

This two-CD set contains all of the music that Sarah Vaughan recorded during her Tokyo concert for Mainstream. The 49-year-old singer is heard at the height of her powers, really digging into the standards and making magic out of such numbers as “Poor,” “‘Round Midnight,” “Willow Weep,” “My Funny Valentine,” “Summertime,” and “Bye Bye Blackbird.” This two-fer (which finds Sassy accompanied by pianist Carl Schroeder, bassist John Gianelli, and drummer Jimmy Cobb) gives one a definitive look at the brilliant (and sometimes miraculous) singer.Read More

During 2018, Norah Jones concentrated her creative endeavors on a series of digital singles that found the singer/songwriter stretching herself stylistically. Usually, she pushed herself by teaming with new, unexpected collaborators, including Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy — a tactic that guaranteed a variety of sounds and songs, a practice put into sharp relief by the 2019 release of Begin Again.Read More

The success of Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, which opened at the Nederlander Theater on Broadway on May 12, 1981, and ran 333 performances, until June 30, 1982 (Horne’s 65th birthday) was a cumulative one. Horne had been performing in nightclubs, theaters, and casinos for 40 years, singing many of the same songs she sang at the Nederlander, but somehow the Broadway context and her perseverance combined to make this more than a glorified club act. Horne had the benefit of being an artist who had faced adversity (particularly, the vicissitudes of being an African-American star in Hollywood in the 1940s) and, if not triumphed, at least persisted, so that, as she reached her golden age, her struggles within the entertainment business could be seen as heroic. And, she was still at it, which made her, in the nomenclature of the time, a “survivor.”Read More

Rebecca Pidgeon’s signature sweet voice has spanned three solo albums and distinct musical and song styles; now commemorating the best from each album, Retrospective highlights the individual tiles that together create an exacting mosaic of this amazing singer/songwriter. The collection starts off with a bang featuring Rebecca’s highly regarded rendition of Spanish Harlem, considered an audiophile classic. The release hosts key selections from each of Rebecca’s albums including such favorites as 24 Hours of Love, Fhear a Bhata, and Primitive Man. Retrospective finishes gallantly with the inspiring piece that combines spoken word by husband and famous playwright David Mamet with Sam Cooke’s Bring It On Home To Me, all warmly overlaid with Robert Burns’ famous poem Auld Lang Syne.Read More

Reflective yet contemporary, Rebecca’s lovely voice rings with honest, unpretentious confidence and vivid tenderness. Might as well admit my bias: Jacintha has become one of my favorite living female vocalists. I initially came across her work when my friend Paul Seydor, a senior writer for The Absolute Sound, gave me a copy of her first Groove Note album Here’s to Ben, a tribute to legendary tenor saxophonist Ben Webster. I don’t know which impressed me more: the lushness of her voice or the vividness of her interpretations. Read More

When Ying Tan told me that Jacintha’s second album for Groove Note would be a collection of Johnny Mercer songs, I felt a quickening of the pulse. Here surely would be a recital of rare sympathy: one of the most purely romantic of all lyricists interpreted by one of the most ravishingly beautiful voices to come along in jazz and popular music this last quarter century. Few new singers of standards display as much awareness of the performing traditions of the American popular song as this Singapore-born and raised jazz singer, whose first album for Groove Note paid explicit tribute to the great tenor saxophonist Ben Webster. The Moonlight Sessions Project, Volumes One and Two, are an exploration into the depths of love lost and love present. The project was developed with the intention of creating a new take and approach to arrangements and was dedicated to the famous arranger, Sammy Nestico, best known for his swinging Count Basie arrangements but also worked for many other music greats. Mr. Nestico was involved in the development of this project from its inception.Read More
