Nominally, the Police were punk rock, but that’s only in the loosest sense of the term. The trio’s nervous, reggae-injected pop/rock was punky, but it wasn’t necessarily punk. All three members were considerably more technically proficient than the average punk or new wave band. Andy Summers had a precise guitar attack that created dense, interlocking waves of sounds and effects. Stewart Copeland could play polyrhythms effortlessly. And Sting, with his high, keening voice, was capable of constructing infectiously catchy pop songs.Read More

To be fair, this six-CD set is really for completists only, since the price tag is likely to put off anyone else. But if you’ve been hooked on the beautiful guitar work of Hank Marvin and the surprisingly muscularity of the band, delving deeper is a very good idea. Not only do you get all the big hits — like “Apache,” “F.B.I.,” and “The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt” (or even the wonderfully named “I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Arthur”) — you get literally everything.Read More

The original members of Toto were L.A.-based session men who had played with everyone from George Benson to Boz Scaggs and wanted to create something they could call their own. They scored a hit straight out of the gate with the album rock hit “Hold the Line” from their 1978 debut. Their biggest success, however, came in the early ’80s with a pair of smash hits, “Rosanna” and “Africa,” plus the breakout, six-Grammy success of the Toto IV album. The band endured some major personnel shake-ups over the years, and in 1992, founding drummer Jeff Porcaro died unexpectedly, but Toto continued working, even as the individual members kept their lucrative session careers going. Hands down, this epochal concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden — first issued on three LPs in a handsome orange-colored box — was the crowning event of George Harrison’s public life, a gesture of great goodwill that captured the moment in history and, not incidentally, produced some rousing music as a permanent legacy. Having been moved by his friend Ravi Shankar’s appeal to help the homeless Bengali refugees of the 1971 India-Pakistan war, Harrison leaped into action, organizing on short notice what became a bellwether for the spectacular rock & roll benefits of the 1980s and beyond.Read More

Relying on their top-notch songwriting and impeccable vocals, the Bee Gees were able to craft a long-running career that began in the late ’50s in Australia. Along the way they became a hit-producing psychedelic pop group in England during the ’60s, the biggest disco band in the world in the ’70s, and had a late comeback as adult contemporary crooners in the ’90s. Their long-reaching influence extended past sales figures and saw their sound and style mirrored in acts as disparate as Justin Timberlake and of montreal.Read More
