Culled from several shows taking place in the Pacific Northwest on summer tours of 1973 and 1974, Believe It if You Need It zeroes in on the Grateful Dead in a particularly playful and comfortable phase, with the Deadhead-populated region and the Dead’s first taste of financial success giving their playing in this time a more carefree fluidity. Certainly by 1973, they had come a long way from their hand-to-mouth beginnings, establishing their own label, touring with an over-the-top sound system, and showing up to larger crowds every year. Grand Funk Railroad’s 1969 debut is a wildly uneven affair. Although the exuberant energy and power-trio theatrics that would fuel their 1970s hits are in place, the group’s songwriting and arranging abilities are very much in their infancy. The biggest problems in terms of songwriting are the often-amateurish lyrics: “Anybody’s Answer” is a sincere but muddled attempt at a message song that expends a lot of energy without ever focusing on a particular target and “Heartbreaker” is a love lament that is content to trot out a series of well-worn heartbreak clichés. Playing a rather brilliant Steinway D instrument at the Academy of Music, Stockholm, in 2003, British pianist Freddy Kempf (b. 1977) makes a lyrical and aggressive contribution to the long line of virtuosos who traverse these familiar sets of etudes. Engineer Jens Braun pushes the sonic envelope to the brink, with the C# Minor, Op. 10, No. 4 threatening to shatter at the extreme ends, but it all works nicely. Given that Renaissance and Baroque specialist Jordi Savall is not necessarily the conductor to whom one would first turn for Beethoven, he is nevertheless a great musician whose opinion is worth listening to in any repertory. As one might expect, he has some unorthodox opinions in this survey of Beethoven’s first five symphonies (a complete set was planned but was at least temporarily cut short by the 2020 pandemic). Savall augments the 35 players of his Le Concert des Nations orchestra with 25 other young players for a total of 60, historically in line with what Beethoven would have expected. Houston is featured on three of the 16 selections including the “Exhale (Shoop Shoop),” which crested at the number spot on the Billboard R&B charts for eight consecutive weeks and one week at number one on the pop charts.
