Recorded quickly during Led Zeppelin’s first American tours, Led Zeppelin II provided the blueprint for all the heavy metal bands that followed it. Since the group could only enter the studio for brief amounts of time, most of the songs that compose II are reworked blues and rock & roll standards that the band was performing on-stage at the time. Not only did the short amount of time result in a lack of original material, it made the sound more direct. After debuting with 1973’s excellent but neglected Show Your Hand (later reissued as Put It Where You Want It), the Average White Band switched from MCA to Atlantic and hit big with this self-titled gem. Upon first hearing gutsy, Tower of Power-influenced funk like “Person to Person” and the instrumental “Pick Up the Pieces” (a number one R&B hit), many soul fans were shocked to learn that not only were the bandmembers white — they were whites from Scotland. The Criteria for the selection of releases by the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, is nothing less than what all audiophiles demand from their own reproduction systems. In addition to a broad frequency response, negligible signal processing, and quiet, clean presings, a truly 3-dimensional stereophonic effect is mandatory. It wasn’t difficult then, for me to select a our premier release, The Mystic Moods Ochestra’s performance of “Emotions.” Continue reading “The Mystic Moods Orchestra – Emotions (1968) [1978, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

“Cosmic Force” was surrealistically recorded in 1973, nearly four years before anyone had even heard of Star Wars. One of my associate producer, who has spent years in Space himself (hmmmm), brought this concept to earth in musical form. To him, the album represents all that there is, there ever was, or there ever will be. Mistaken Identity should have established Kim Carnes as a huge international star. Her Rod Stewart rasp, affiliation with Kenny Rogers, management by Ken Kragen when he was arguably at his peak, makes one wonder why the across-the-board success of “Bette Davis Eyes” couldn’t be duplicated. Three years after the success of this album, Tina Turner actually did conquer the world, the various producers on Private Dancer weaving enough different textures to make for a multi-dimensional masterpiece. Fly Like an Eagle is the ninth studio album by American rock group Steve Miller Band. The album was released in May 1976 (see 1976 in music) by Capitol Records in the United States, Canada and Japan and Mercury Records in Europe. The album was a success, spawning three singles: the title track, “Take the Money and Run” and “Rock’n Me”, and eventually receiving quadruple platinum certification from the RIAA. Fired by Columbia Records in 1973, Clive Davis took over tiny Bell Records in 1974 and turned it into Arista, determined to re-establish his record-selling credentials. One beneficiary of this was Melissa Manchester, who had made two good, but poor-selling albums for Bell. Davis turned on the money tap, and the result was this L.A.-recorded Vini Poncia/Richard Perry production that seemed determined to turn Manchester into a pop diva. Totally Hot is one of the most fun albums from Olivia Newton John. Total abandon is its trademark, the atmosphere lightened up a bit, and from top to bottom it is one of her most satisfying projects. “Please Don’t Keep Me Waiting” is a girl group all grown up. Is it Newton-John’s voice or Michael Botticker’s synthesizer at the end of the first track? A little jarring for her country audience, but she takes care of them on “Dancin’ ‘Round and ‘Round,” a wonderful country-pop tune and quick about face. As with the Let Me Be There release, her name is prominently splashed on the cover and the tan background suits her well, with the mysterious look with the kerchief on the inside cover as playful as the music. Picture This found Huey Lewis and the News developing a signature sound, but they truly came into their own on their third album, Sports. It’s true that the record holds together better than its predecessors because it has a clear, professional production, but the real key is the songs. Where their previous albums were cluttered with generic filler, nearly every song on Sports has a huge hook. And even if the News aren’t bothered by breaking new ground, there’s no denying that the craftmanship on Sports is pretty infectious. We Must Believe in Magic is the fourth studio album by American country music singer Crystal Gayle. Released on June 24, 1977, it became her highest selling album, reaching #2 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and #12 on the main Billboard album chart (her first album to enter the main chart and her only album to make the Top 30 there to date). It was certified platinum by the RIAA in 1978. The album also has the distinction of being the first platinum album recorded by a female artist in country music. It was also Gayle’s first album to chart in the UK, where it reached #15, and was certified silver by the BPI. In the Netherlands, it stayed on the charts for two weeks and peaked at #29. Boston is the debut studio album by American rock band Boston. Produced by Tom Scholz and John Boylan, the album was released on August 25, 1976, in the United States by Epic Records. Scholz had studied classical piano in his childhood and became involved in the Boston music scene in the late 1960s. He subsequently started to concentrate on demos recorded in his apartment basement with singer Brad Delp, and although their previous group, Mother’s Milk, had received numerous rejection letters from major record labels in the early 1970s, by 1975, the demo tape had fallen into the hands of CBS-owned Epic Records, who signed them.
