The Weavers celebrated their 15th anniversary by performing two concerts — May 2 and 3, 1963 — at Carnegie Hall, the site of their historic 1955 comeback concert, and invited back former members Pete Seeger and Erik Darling, as well as introducing new member Bernie Krause. The shows served to reaffirm the status of a group that had fostered the folk boom of the late ’50s and early ’60s, yet had been bypassed by it as others scored with their songsRead More

AliaVox’s Orient-Occident 1200-1700 is unique in Jordi Savall’s recorded output in that, despite the title, it has no correspondence whatsoever with any specific historical or musicological program. Rather, like the “East meets West” albums pairing violinist Yehudi Menhuin with sitar player Ravi Shankar, Orient-Occident 1200-1700 brings Savall and ace Hespèrion XXI percussionist Pedro Estevan into the orbit of Greek santur player Dimitris Psonis, Israeli oud player Yair Dalal, Moroccan oudist Driss El Maloumi, and three Afghan traditional musicians — Osman Ahrman, Khaled Arman, and Siar Hashimi.Read More

Talk about crossover! Kriya recorded their album in Finland, the songs are mostly translated from the original Sanskrit to Finnish, & the music generally sounds to me like a mix of Indian, Irish & Finnish. There are English translations printed of the lyrics, but this is another of those graphic failures where the background art or photography obscures the type & it is often unreadable. There do seem to be some connections between East Indian Sanskirt & Finnish, though I don’t know the details. Several of the songs have traditional Indian lyrics.Read More

This is as close to Latin purist Mongo as we have heard in recent years, an eight-piece salsa band — including several members of the 1997 Tito Puente ensemble, like trumpeter Ray Vega, altoist Bobby Porcelli and tenorman Mitch Frohman — playing a brace of Mongo classics and Latin jazz pieces live before a hushed crowd in Seattle’s Jazz Alley.Read More
