Blondie turned to British pop producer Mike Chapman for their third album, on which they abandoned any pretensions to new wave legitimacy (just in time, given the decline of the new wave) and emerged as a pure pop band. But it wasn’t just Chapman that made Parallel Lines Blondie’s best album; it was the band’s own songwriting, including Deborah Harry, Chris Stein, and James Destri’s “Picture This,” and Harry and Stein’s “Heart of Glass,” and Harry and new bass player Nigel Harrison’s “One Way or Another,” plus two contributions from nonbandmember Jack Lee, “Will Anything Happen?” and “Hanging on the Telephone.” Continue reading “Blondie – Parallel Lines (1978) {1981, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip}”

You know you’re in the presence of sonic greatness as soon as the first few seconds of the opening “Tunnel of Love” pass, as the introductory passage built on organ and piano – new additions to Dire Straits’ palette – intertwine with the unmistakable coil-spring twang of Knopfler’s guitar. The three-dimensional, full-bodied presentation of the latter instrument on this Mobile Fidelity SACD is alone worth the price of admission. Mastered from the original master tapes, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered-edition hybrid SACD of Communiqué elevates Dire Straits’ sophomore album to an even higher plane. Recorded in the Bahamas by Muscle Shoals veterans Barry Beckett and Jerry Wexler, the songs benefit from a laidback approach that makes guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler and company’s stellar playing seem even more fluent – particularly when experienced on this collector’s version. Elvis Costello was as much a pub rocker as he was a punk rocker and nowhere is that more evident than on his debut, My Aim Is True. It’s not just that Clover, a San Franciscan rock outfit led by Huey Lewis (absent here), back him here, not the Attractions; it’s that his sensibility is borrowed from the pile-driving rock & roll and folksy introspection of pub rockers like Brinsley Schwarz, adding touches of cult singer/songwriters like Randy Newman and David Ackles. Abandoned Luncheonette, Hall & Oates’ second album, was the first indication of the duo’s talent for sleek, soul-inflected pop/rock. It featured the single “She’s Gone,” which would become a big hit in 1975 when it was re-released following the success of “Sara Smile.” Continue reading “Daryl Hall & John Oates – Abandoned Luncheonette (1973) {1982, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip}”

Pop culture, comedic satire, and rock music have always made for strange bedfellows. With all due respect to the collective genius involved in the Spinal Tap saga, it is safe to say no other artists have been able to repeat or re-create the delicate balance exhibited in the Rutles’ multimedia parody. This venture included a made-for-television mockumentary titled All You Need Is Cash. On this 1990 CD release, the contents of the original 1978 soundtrack — which incidentally bore the same name as the show — are included, as are an additional half-dozen recordings made for the film, but ultimately became victims of the time limitations inherent in the vinyl medium. The Bee Gees had entered the early ’70s with a roaring success in the guise of “Lonely Days” and its accompanying album, which established their sound as a softer pop variant on the Moody Blues’ brand of progressive rock. Trafalgar, which followed, carried the process further on what was their longest single LP release, clocking in at 47 minutes. The music all sounded meaningful, much of it displaying the same kind of faux-grandeur that the Moody Blues affected on their music of this era, the core group (playing pretty hard) acompanied by either Mellotron-generated orchestra or the real thing, with the group’s soaring harmonies and Robin Gibb’s quavaring lead vocals all over the place. Roxette were one of the biggest global pop acts of the ’90s, selling over 75 million records around the world and dominating the charts with songs like “The Look,” “Listen to Your Heart,” “Joyride,” and “It Must Have Been Love,” all four of which hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Hailing from Halmstad, Sweden, Roxette are a duo featuring vocalist Marie Fredriksson and songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Per Gessle. Fredriksson and Gessle first met in the late ’70s, when she was a member of the pop combo Strul & Ma Mas Barn and he played with Gyllene Tider, one of Sweden’s biggest groups of the late ’70s and early ’80s. In 1981, after Fredriksson’s group broke up, she joined Gyllene Tider as backing vocalist for a concert tour, and later worked with them in the studio in the same capacity. Best known for his stint fronting art pop hitmakers Supertramp, Roger Hodgson was born in Portsmouth, England, on March 21, 1950. While growing up in Oxford, Hodgson started playing guitar before he was a teenager, and was soon writing songs while at boarding school. He began recording during the late ’60s, issuing a single in 1969 as part of the session band Argosy with Elton John (then known as Reg Dwight). 1983’s Airborne by Eagles guitarist Don Felder is truly style over substance. For a member of such a phenomenally successful and visible group to release something so nondescript is really food for thought. Felder produced this effort, and he has friends galore pack the proceedings with lots of musicianship, the late Carlos Vega is on drums, as are Joe Vitale, Russ Kunkel, and Tris Imboden; fellow latter-day Eagle Timothy B. Schmit provides backing vocals, and there are appearances by Jeff Lorber Continue reading “Don Felder – Airborne (1983) [CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”
