The Morning After is a near perfect follow-up to the J. Geils Band’s self-titled debut album. It’s more of the same winning blend of rocked-out blues, jumped-up soul, and pure rock & roll wildness with enough attitude and energy to get a club full of people from zero to sweaty in less than 60 seconds.Read More

Originally released in 1964 on Columbia, produced by fellow Country Music Hall of Fame inductee Don Law, and featuring note-for-note re-recordings of several staples Johnny Cash made for Sun Records – including the title track, “Hey Porter,” and “Big River” – as well as several new originals, I Walk the Line cemented the singer’s place as the leading country artist of the era.Read More

Mobile Fidelity reissued two of the Jam’s best albums, All Mod Cons and Sound Affects, on one gold CD. Although these are two classic records, only hardcore Jam fans will need to acquire this disc, since it carries such a high retail price. Granted, Mobile Fidelity’s remastering is very good, but the remastering on the box set Direction Reaction Creation matches it, and that five-disc set is available for roughly twice the price of this single disc.Read More

No one expected the success of Dream Weaver when it was released, but it sailed to the top of the charts, and with good reason. Backed with only drums and a wide assortment of keyboards, Gary Wright crafted instantly recognizable tunes such as the title cut and “Love Is Alive,” which caught on and remain staples of classic rock stations around the U.S. All very revolutionary and new at the time, Dream Weaver hasn’t lost any of its magic over time.Read More

Stéphane Grappelli was a French jazz violinist who founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France with guitarist Django Reinhardt in 1934. It was one of the first all-string jazz bands. He has been called “the grandfather of jazz violinists” and continued playing concerts around the world well into his ’80s. This 1969 album is a collaboration with Barney Kessel, an American jazz guitarist born in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Noted in particular for his knowledge of chords and inversions and chord-based melodies, he was a member of many prominent jazz groups as well as a “first call” guitarist for studio, film, and television recording sessions. Kessel was a member of the group of session musicians informally known as the Wrecking Crew.Read More

This is the perfect setting for acoustic guitarist Earl Klugh, playing strong melodies (including such standards as “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “Laura,” “Mona Lisa,” and “Two for the Road”) while joined by strings and several horns in an orchestra arranged and conducted by David Matthews. As usual for a Klugh session, the guitarist sticks mostly to the themes and does not improvise much, as he never considered himself a jazz player; but the overall effect is quite pleasing.Read More

In a way, this is the veteran duo’s version of Fathers and Sons, a meeting of old black bluesmen with young white admirers that Muddy Waters and Otis Spann cut with Mike Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield. John Mayall and John Hammond, Jr. are among the “youngsters” on this powerful statement that includes a definitive version of Randy Newman’s wickedly subtle anti-slavery tune “Sail Away.” Sonny Terry’s trademark whoops are energizing. The repartee between him and Brownie McGhee might convince you they were fast friends if you didn’t know otherwise.Read More
