Known primarily for orchestral versions of contemporary songs, his recordings during the late ’60s and early ’70s as the Ray Conniff Singers included many straightforward recordings of current pop hits. This 1973 collection includes songs by Helen Reddy, Johnny Nash, the Fifth Dimension, Gallery, the Jackson 5, Albert Hammond, the Isley Brothers and Seals & Crofts! This fun easy listening album has only an average track listing, although it is a cheerful artifact of the early ’70s. In January 1973, Perry Como traveled to Nashville and cut several tracks with Chet Atkins producing. RCA Victor quickly released his cover of Don McLean’s “And I Love You So,” which had appeared on the singer/songwriter’s little-heard 1970 debut album Tapestry, as a single, and when the disc showed signs of chart success (it eventually made the pop Top 40 and hit number one on the easy listening charts), Como and Atkins went back into the studio in March and April to complete an album by cutting versions of recent pop hits. In This recording, William Kanengiser and the Alexander String Quarter pay tribute to a group of English musicians who conquered the musical world with their revolutionary explorations. From the Elizabethan lutenist John Dowland to the pop/rock icons Sting, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, these artists made a lasting impact far from the shores of their small island.
