This compilation brings together the first albums of Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. Released in 1960 and 1962 respectively and titled by their respective names, they were the first recorded statements by a pair of artists who were spokespeople for the folk and protest movement that had grown up in the late Fifties and was aligning itself with the US Civil Rights Campaign. Notwithstanding one or two isolated exceptions, it wasn’t until the mid-Sixties that independent female voices really began to be heard within the music industry. The feminist movement naturally coincided with the first signs of genuine musical emancipation. In North America, Joan Baez and Buffy Sainte-Marie emerged through the folk clubs, coffee-houses and college campuses to inspire a generation of wannabe female singers and musicians with their strong, independent mentality and social compassion, while the British scene’s combination of folk song revival and the Beatles-led pop explosion Continue reading “VA – Milk Of The Tree: An Anthology Of Female Vocal Folk And Singer-Songwriters 1966-73 (2017) {3CD-Set}”

The first non-blues artist on Analogue Productions, Los Angeles singer/songwriter Nancy Bryan offers in Neon Angel, her second APO release, social commentary with intense soul. Bryan’s honesty in her approach to song writing has created a stylization that defies category. Neon Angel is a unique and personal body of work. In it, her lyrics are visual and socially relevant, yet intimate, poetic and immediate. Her music ranges from the ethereal to a plaintive earthiness, and at times both expressions are grasped in the same moment. Continue reading “Nancy Bryan – Neon Angel (2000) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Legendary Deep Purple and Rainbow guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (b. April 14, 1945, Weston-super-Mare, England) shifted his musical focus away from hard rock in the late ’90s and started concentrating on his love of Renaissance-era music. He formed Blackmore’s Night with his fiancĂ©e, vocalist/lyricist Candice Night (b. May 8, 1971, Hauppauge, Long Island, New York), and recruited other musicians from around the world to combine elements of world music, Renaissance, new age, folk, and rock & roll. Blackmore didn’t exactly retire his Fender Stratocaster, but he plays acoustic guitar almost exclusively in Blackmore’s Night. Continue reading “Blackmore’s Night – Discography”

The tracks on this two-CD, 31-song anthology, spanning Cohen’s career from his 1967 debut album through 2002’s Ten New Songs, were chosen by Cohen himself. It could thus be regarded as an accurate mirror of how Cohen sees his own career path and catalog highlights. Continue reading “Leonard Cohen – The Essential Leonard Cohen (2002)”

The Beginning of Survival is a whopping 16-track collection from Joni Mitchell’s Geffen period, recorded between 1985-1998, and carefully chosen by the artist as “commentaries on the world in which we live.” One has to wonder about the title: if by saying this is “the beginning of survival,” Mitchell is referring to her own retirement strategy — she is no longer making new records. With the Vietnam War winding down, Joan Baez, who had devoted one side of her last album to her trip to Hanoi, delivered the kind of commercial album A&M Records must have wanted when it signed her three years earlier. But she did it on her own terms, putting together a session band of contemporary jazz veterans like Larry Carlton, Wilton Felder, and Joe Sample, and mixing a wise selection from the work of current singer-songwriters like Jackson Browne and John Prine with pop covers of Stevie Wonder and the Allman Brothers Band, and an unusually high complement of her own writing. It’s almost impossible to regard the soundtrack albums for the Michael Wadleigh documentary Woodstock, simply as music, apart from the event that inspired them or what that event has come to represent. Music from the Original Soundtrack and More: Woodstock was originally released by Atlantic’s Cotillion imprint as a three-LP set in a gatefold sleeve.
