When he recorded this album, his lone date as a leader, trumpeter Tommy Turrentine (who was a member of Max Roach’s group along with his brother, the soon-to-be famous tenor Stanley Turrentine) seemed to have a potentially great future. Unfortunately, ill health would eventually force his retirement. Continue reading “Tommy Turrentine – Tommy Turrentine (1960) [2003, Audio Fidelity Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Although the title of this reissue is not necessarily accurate (Buddy Rich’s 1966 big band was a stronger unit), this is a high-quality jazz album. Rich surprisingly does not solo much (just on Chick Corea’s “Fiesta”) but the material is strong, the arrangements (by Mike Abene, Frank Perowsky, Tom Boros, Barry Keiner and Barry Mintzer) are colorful, and the soloists are excellent. Although chronologically the last to be issued, this collection includes some of the best performances from the tapes which would produce the albums Cookin’, Relaxin’, Workin’, and ultimately, Steamin’. A primary consideration of these fruitful sessions is the caliber of musicians — Miles Davis (trumpet), Red Garland (piano), John Coltrane (tenor sax), and Philly Joe Jones (drums) — who were basically doing their stage act in the studio. During the 1970s, solo piano box sets were rare. When Keith Jarrett’s monolithic, ten-LP solo box, Sun Bear Concerts, arrived from ECM in 1978, the only comparable collection was The Tatum Solo Masterpieces, a six-disc set of the pianist’s ’50s sides. Jarrett’s five Japanese concerts from November of 1976 in Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo, and Sapporo were completely improvised and gloriously recorded by engineer Okihiro Sugano. Most jazz critics greeted it as a seminal work that set Jarrett apart from his peers. Continue reading “Keith Jarrett – Sun Bear Concerts (1978) [2017, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Charles Mingus’ debut for Columbia, Mingus Ah Um is a stunning summation of the bassist’s talents and probably the best reference point for beginners. While there’s also a strong case for The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady as his best work overall, it lacks Ah Um’s immediate accessibility and brilliantly sculpted individual tunes. Mingus’ compositions and arrangements were always extremely focused, assimilating individual spontaneity into a firm consistency of mood, and that approach reaches an ultra-tight zenith on Mingus Ah Um. Having completed what he (and many critics) regarded as his masterwork in The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, Charles Mingus’ next sessions for Impulse found him looking back over a long and fruitful career. Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus is sort of a “greatest hits revisited” record, as the bassist revamps or tinkers with some of his best-known works. “This album represents a small percentage of the huge amount of unreleased material we are hoping to roll out in the near future, rather than letting it gather dust in some archive. The big band tracks were recorded in 2014 and the duets more recently. Chris White and Paul Moran individually picked the songs that they wanted to do new band arrangements for. The Willie Nelson and Kurt Elling tracks were recorded in 2018 and 2019, the Curtis Stigers and Joss Stone tracks in 2018.” Continue reading “Van Morrison – New Arrangements and Duets (2024) [CD-Quality + Hi-Res] [Official Digital Release]”
