The GSC compilation 36 All-Time Greatest Hits does offer three-dozen solid songs by Dinah Shore, one of America’s foremost entertainers from the ’40s to the ’60s, though they’re scattered across three discs and the performances are of a dodgy vintage. The note on the back — “All tracks originally recorded prior to 1972” — might soothe the fears of some, but it raises more questions than it answers: at what point in Shore’s career were these recorded, and with whom? As the 1950s came to a close, Nat King Cole (vocals/piano) continued creating stylish renditions of pop and jazz flavored standards. On Welcome to the Club (1959) the artist teams up with Dave Cavanaugh and the Count Basie combo — minus the maestro himself due to contractual restraints — for one of Cole’s most powerful collections supported by a big band.
