Sparkling sound abounds throughout (even on the old acetate masters like “Lover”), with the first three discs covering not only the best issued Capitol masters, but three of Paul and Ford’s radio shows for NBC and assorted catchy radio commercials for Robert Hall clothiers and Rheingold beer. Companion was recorded in a special three-night series of shows in July, 1999 at Chicago’s famed Green Mill jazz club — an unusually short amount of time to produce a live album. The GSC compilation 36 All-Time Greatest Hits does offer three-dozen solid songs by Dinah Shore, one of America’s foremost entertainers from the ’40s to the ’60s, though they’re scattered across three discs and the performances are of a dodgy vintage. The note on the back — “All tracks originally recorded prior to 1972” — might soothe the fears of some, but it raises more questions than it answers: at what point in Shore’s career were these recorded, and with whom? As the 1950s came to a close, Nat King Cole (vocals/piano) continued creating stylish renditions of pop and jazz flavored standards.
