The Allman Brothers came first, but Lynyrd Skynyrd epitomized Southern rock. The Allmans were exceptionally gifted musicians, as much bluesmen as rockers. A Rock and Roll Alternative was the Atlanta Rhythm Section’s breakthrough record. After five albums and four years of trying, they hadn’t gotten higher than number 74 in the LP lists, but this time their mixture of country and rock finally found its audience, largely due to the single “So Into You” (number seven pop, number 11 easy listening), so that the album soared to number 11 and went gold. It was only fair: the ARS had perfected a sound that was lighter and more accessible than the Allmans/Lynyrd Skynyrd school of Southern rock, but no less accomplished, and A Rock and Roll Alternative was the embodiment of it. King box set — MCA assembled a similar four-disc set called King of the Blues in 1992, Ace had a tremendous four-CD box called The Vintage Years in 2002 that covered his pre-ABC/Paramount recordings (apparently every ten years it’s time for a new B.B. box) — but it certainly is the most ambitious, arriving in two separate career-spanning incarnations. While quite a few arena rock acts of the ’70s found the transformation into the ’80s quite difficult, several acts continued to flourish and enjoyed some of their biggest commercial success: Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, and especially Foreigner. Foreigner’s leader from the beginning has been British guitarist Mick Jones, who first broke into the music biz as a “hired gun” of sorts, appearing on recordings by George Harrison and Peter Frampton, and as part of a later-day version of hard rockers Spooky Tooth. By the mid-’70s, Jones had relocated to New York City, where he was a brief member of the Leslie West Band and served as an A&R man for a record company.
