In the End is the eighth and final studio album by the Irish alternative rock band The Cranberries, released on 26 April 2019 from BMG. It is the band’s first release since the death of singer Dolores O’Riordan, who died of drowning due to alcohol intoxication on 15 January 2018, though her vocals are featured posthumously. The surviving instrumentalists pieced together her demos with in-studio recordings over the course of the subsequent year and worked with long-time producer Stephen Street to finalize the album. Biopic The Dirt tells the story of Mötley Crüe’s wild ride through their time as one of the most popular and most debaucherous bands of the metal years. During a blistering run that lasted the entirety of the ’80s, the L.A. band sold millions of records, toured the world, and challenged death constantly with reckless behavior, substance abuse, and the kind of mayhem that sometimes seems like it only existed in the time when hair metal reigned. Some of these misadventures were collected in the 2001 book The Dirt, and the 2019 film adaptation of the book further dramatizes some of the group’s already unbelievable antics, as well as getting into the music that made it all happen. Altoist Jackie McLean’s second session as a leader is reissued on this CD. The music that he makes with trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Elmo Hope, bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Art Taylor is essentially hard bop with fairly simple (or in some cases nonexistent) melody statements preceding two romps through the “I Got Rhythm” chord changes, a pair of blues, a thinly disguised “Embraceable You” and a straightforward version of “A Foggy Day.” Enjoyable if not really essential music from the up-and-coming altoist. Here was Bill Hardman, who he introduced into a quintet with Mal Waldron (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Philly Joe Jones (drums). Hardman’s hot breaking tone sounds a bit less forceful than on his (soon-to-be) later work with The Messengers, but it was already identifiable…Chambers has some exciting bowed spots, Mal Waldron was a bit bland and while Jones’ drumming fills the role, it missed the push Art Taylor’s drumming seemed to invite so often with McLean. Lou Donaldson’s undisputed masterpiece, Blues Walk, marks the point where the altoist began to decisively modify his heavy Charlie Parker influence and add a smoky, bluesy flavor of his own. The material is still firmly in the bebop vein, and the mellower moments aren’t as sleepy as some of Donaldson’s subsequent work, so the album sounds vital and distinctive even as it slows down and loosens things up. The second record by the Three Sounds (which, like too many of their recordings, has yet to be reissued on CD in the U.S.) features the increasingly popular group in prime form. Pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andy Simpkins and drummer Bill Dowdy are in top form performing their brand of funky jazz, which left plenty of room for inventive solos along with the percolating grooves. On this set, the trio plays seven standards (including “Besame Mucho,” “Love Walked In” and “I Could Write a Book”), plus the original “Jinne Lou.” Well worth searching for. Somehow the same label issued two albums with the same name in the same year. This one, with 15 tracks, is vastly preferable to its 10-song counterpart. Both releases hit the high points with the irresistible “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “I’m a Man,” and others. With half as many tunes, though, this album includes the minor hit “Strong Love” and “Goodbye Stevie,” written by the group to commemorate the departure of sensational singer and multi-instrumentalist prodigy Steve Winwood. “Waltz for Lumumba” presages the jazzier turns he would take with Traffic. After two albums, Todd Rundgren had one hit and a burgeoning cult following, plus growing respect as a hitmaking record producer. There’s no question he was busy, but as it turns out, all this work only scratched the surface of his ambition. He had decided to abandon the Runt pretense and recorded a full double album by himself (save for one side). Others had recorded one-man albums before, most notably Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney, but Rundgren — without borrowing musically from either artist — captured the homemade ambience of McCartney with the visionary feel of Music of My Mind, adding an encyclopedic knowledge of pop music from Gilbert & Sullivan through Jimi Hendrix, plus the crazed zeal of a pioneer.
