Most of the Sinatra recordings available during the 1950s consisted of his contemporary work for Capitol Records. But every so often his former label, Columbia Records, would get something together on LP from among his ’40s and early-’50s sides. The Voice was one of a handful of ’50s long-players showcasing the first phase of Sinatra’s solo career, and at the time it wowed listeners — the focus is on the ballads, and Continue reading “Frank Sinatra – The Voice (1955) [1994, MasterSound Remastered]”

Alan Parsons delivered a detailed blueprint for his Project on their 1975 debut, Tales of Mystery and Imagination, but it was on its 1977 follow-up, I Robot, that the outfit reached its true potential. Borrowing not just its title but concept from Isaac Asimov’s classic sci-fi Robot trilogy, this album explores many of the philosophies regarding artificial intelligence — will it overtake man, what does it mean to be man, what responsibilities do mechanical beings have to their creators, and so on and so forth — with enough knotty intelligence to make it a seminal text of late-’70s geeks, and while it is also true Continue reading “The Alan Parsons Project ‎- I Robot (1977) [1985, MFSL Remastered]”

Tales of Mystery and Imagination Edgar Allan Poe, is the debut album by the progressive rock group The Alan Parsons Project, released in 1976. The lyrical and musical themes – retellings of horror stories and poetry by Edgar Allan Poe — attracted a cult audience. The title of the album is taken from a popular title for a collection of Poe’s macabre tales of the same name, Tales of Mystery & Imagination, first published in 1908 and reprinted many times since Continue reading “The Alan Parsons Project – Tales Of Mystery And Imagination Edgar Allan Poe (1976) [1994, MFSL Remastered]”

George Benson’s sound is so recognizable that, in its way, it’s quite comforting to hear his voice or his guitar come across on the radio or in a club. His recordings have been polished and extravagant in many cases, but there are those signature elements — his relaxed delivery and silky touch on the strings and his voice, as evocative as a cool breeze floating across a hot summer night. Songs and Stories doesn’t deviate from his formula a great deal, but it doesn’t have to. He’s chosen ten ubiquitous pop tunes from a variety of songwriters (and one by a relatively new kid on the block), and with the help of producers John Burk and Marcus Miller, he puts them across in fine style. Upon its release in 2019, You’re the Man was billed as a “lost” album — an album intended to appear between Marvin Gaye’s 1971 masterwork What’s Going On and 1973’s Let’s Get It On. The story isn’t quite so simple. Even though Motown slated a release for an album, there’s no real indication that You’re the Man was ever close to completion, and this compilation — available as a double LP or digitally — doesn’t make a convincing case that it was. Psychobilly arrived on the British music scene in the Eighties and has operated under the radar of the mainstream media. Yet the popularity of this street-level music has moved on to continental Europe and now flourishes in America, Australia and Japan. A number of rockabilly artists had a morbid fascination for death and decay that would later feed the psychobilly genre. Continue reading “Various Artists – The Godfathers Of Psychobilly (2012)”

An R&B band that only played pop to get on the charts, Manfred Mann and its various permutations ranked among the most adept British Invasion acts in both styles. South African-born keyboardist Manfred Mann was originally an aspiring jazz player, moving toward R&B when more blues-oriented sounds became in vogue in England in the early ’60s. Original Manfred Mann singer Paul Jones was one of the best British Invasion singers, and his resonant vocals were the best feature of their early R&B sides, which had a slightly jazzier and smoother touch than the early work of the Rolling Stones and Animals.
