Gram Parsons fondness for drugs and high living are said to have been catching up with him while he was recording Grievous Angel, and sadly he wouldn’t live long enough to see it reach record stores, dying from a drug overdose in the fall of 1973. This album is a less ambitious and unified set than his solo debut, but that’s to say that G.P. was a great album while Grievous Angel was instead a very, very good one. Funny that the much-touted “reunion/comeback” album Steel Wheels followed Dirty Work by just three years, while it took the Stones five years to turn out its sequel, Voodoo Lounge — a time frame that seems much more appropriate for a “comeback.” To pile on the irony, Voodoo Lounge feels more like a return to form than its predecessor, even if it’s every bit as calculated and Bill Wyman has flown the coup. Voodoo Lounge confirmed that the Stones could age gracefully, but it never sounded modern; it sounded classicist. One of the most interesting aspects about the Alan Parsons Project is the band’s ability to forge a main theme with each of its songs, while at the same time sounding extremely sharp and polished. Vibraphonist Cal Tjader is in typically fine form on this live set from 1968. His quintet at the time featured Armand Perazza on congas and pianist Joe Kloess and his repertoire ranged from Afro-Cuban jazz to occasional straightahead tunes. Six of the eight selections on this date are originals by band members or Gary McFarland. Although Tjader had been playing this style of music for 15 years by this time, he still was quite creative and enthusiastic, and is heard throughout in excellent form.
