Dinah Shore – 36 All-Time Greatest Hits (1999) [3CD]

Dinah Shore - 36 All-Time Greatest Hits (1999) [3CD]

The GSC compilation 36 All-Time Greatest Hits does offer three-dozen solid songs by Dinah Shore, one of America’s foremost entertainers from the ’40s to the ’60s, though they’re scattered across three discs and the performances are of a dodgy vintage. The note on the back — “All tracks originally recorded prior to 1972” — might soothe the fears of some, but it raises more questions than it answers: at what point in Shore’s career were these recorded, and with whom? Unfortunately, buyers are no wiser after unwrapping the CD than they were before. Continue reading “Dinah Shore – 36 All-Time Greatest Hits (1999) [3CD]”

Journey – Freedom (2022)

Journey - Freedom (2022)

Arriving 11 years after 2011’s Eclipse, Freedom is Journey’s 15th studio effort and their third outing with vocalist Arnel Pineda. It also marks the return of Raised on Radio bassist Randy Jackson, who stepped in after the band’s abrupt split with founding member Ross Valory in 2020. Journey’s post-Steve Perry releases have been reliable yet unremarkable, with showrunners Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain attempting to wring out every last bit of headband sweat from the group’s chart-topping heydays. Pearl Jam – Gigaton (2020)

Pearl Jam - Gigaton (2020)

Urgency has been Pearl Jam’s calling card since their inception, which is why it was a jolt to hear the band sound so settled on 2013’s Lightning Bolt. Maybe it’s the times, maybe it’s the choice to switch producers — the group swapped their longtime collaborator Brendan O’Brien for Josh Evans, who co-produced the album with the band — but Gigaton hits with the strength of a full-force gale. Nobody was between us and the records that we made,’ says Tindersticks frontman Stuart Staples.
