Carly Simon’s best album, No Secrets was also her commercial breakthrough, topping the charts and going gold, along with its leadoff single, “You’re So Vain.” That song set the album’s saucy tone, with its air of sexually frank autobiography (“You had me several years ago/When I was still quite naïve”) and its reflections on the jet-set lifestyle. Truth has since been regarded as a seminal work of heavy metal because of its use of blues toward a hard rock approach. According to Pete Prown and HP Newquist, “although some have claimed that this disc was the first metal album, the sound actually leaned more towards a heavy brand of blues rock.” Classic Rock magazine ranked Truth eighth on its list of the 30 greatest British blues rock albums; an accompanying blurb read, “it was an album that not only helped establish the British blues rock sound, but featured many of its best exponents. Elephant Mountain (1969) is the Youngbloods’ third long-player and marks their debut as a trio — featuring Jesse Colin Young (bass/guitar/vocals), Joe Bauer (drums), and Lowell “Banana” Levinger (keyboards) — after the departure of co-founder Jerry Corbitt (guitar/vocals). Although the band initially formed out of the early ’60s Northeast folk scene, by the time this set was issued they had relocated to the pastoral Northern California county of Marin. David Crosby’s debut solo album was the second release in a trilogy of albums (the others being Paul Kantner’s Blows Against the Empire and Mickey Hart’s Rolling Thunder) involving the indefinite aggregation of Bay Area friends and musical peers that informally christened itself the Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra. Balance is the key element of the Eagles’ self-titled debut album, a collection that contains elements of rock & roll, folk, and country, overlaid by vocal harmonies alternately suggestive of doo wop, the Beach Boys, and the Everly Brothers. If the group kicks up its heels on rockers like “Chug All Night,” “Nightingale,” and “Tryin’,” it is equally convincing on ballads like “Most of Us Are Sad” and “Train Leaves Here This Morning.” Continue reading “Eagles – Eagles (1972) [2021, MFSL Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

After rushing their second album Don’t Look Back, Boston took eight years to complete the album Third Stage. The long delay is even more surprising considering that their sound didn’t change at all; even though only songwriter/guitarist Tom Scholz and vocalist Brad Delp remained from the original lineup, they were the ones responsible for Boston’s sound. As such, it is difficult to avoid comparisons with their landmark debut. Continue reading “Boston – Third Stage (1986) [1993, MFSL Remastered]”

The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. Despite the fact that Seven and the Ragged Tiger couldn’t match the unrestrained pop/rock ebullience of 1982’s Rio, Duran Duran put three of the album’s singles in the Top Ten, taking it to number one in the U.K. Even though “The Reflex” gave the band their first number one hit, there’s an overabundance of fancy glitz and dancefloor flamboyancy running through it, unlike “New Moon on Monday”‘s straight-ahead appeal or “Union of the Snake”‘s mysterious, almost taboo flair. Audiophiles needn’t any introduction to the Alan Parsons Project’s I Robot. Engineered by Parsons after he performed the same duties on Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, the 1977 record reigns as a disc whose taut bass, crisp highs, clean production, and seemingly limitless dynamic range are matched only by the sensational prog-rock fare helmed by the keyboardist. Not surprisingly, it’s been issued myriad times. Continue reading “The Alan Parsons Project – I Robot (1977) [2016, MFSL Remastered, CD-Layer & Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

The San Francisco Bay Area rock scene of the late ’60s was one that encouraged radical experimentation and discouraged the type of mindless conformity that’s often plagued corporate rock. Kind of Blue isn’t merely an artistic highlight for Miles Davis, it’s an album that towers above its peers, a record generally considered as the definitive jazz album. To be reductive, it’s the Citizen Kane of jazz — an accepted work of greatness that’s innovative and entertaining. That may not mean it’s the greatest jazz album ever made, but it certainly is a universally acknowledged standard of excellence.
