Steamhammer – Speech (1972) [2010, Japan, Remastered]

Steamhammer - Speech (1972) [2010, Japan, Remastered]

Musically, Steamhammer was the cream of the crop of all rock bands from their thriving primordial era. In the realm of power rock trios, they were comparable to Cream. Yet this band is far superior in every way, but they failed to get the rave reviews and critical attention that the flashier Cream garnered. Steamhammer – Mountains (1970) [2010, Japan, Remastered]

Steamhammer - Mountains (1970) [2010, Japan, Remastered]

Starting out as an electric blues group in the ’60s, Steamhammer transformed into a hard progressive rock group on this 1970 album. A highly collectable album in the British prog scene, the guitarists of this group — Martin Pugh and Martin Quittenton — were both, in fact, hardworking session musicians who made their names co-writing “Maggie May” with Rod Stewart for Stewart’s debut solo album. Although throughout they maintain their electric blues roots, this album is a fairly awkward and mediocre transition period for the group. However, hardcore collectors of progressive rock will find much to delight in. Continue reading “Steamhammer – Mountains (1970) [2010, Japan, Remastered]”

Mighty Baby - At A Point Between Fate And Destiny: The Complete Recordings (2019) [Box Set]

One minute The Action were the ultimate mod cult band, belting out exuberant Anglicised approximations of Tamla/soul material in clubs across the country, the next they’d shed singer Reggie King and mutated into questing countercultural adventurers Mighty Baby. Under the leadership of guitarist Martin Stone, they would become increasingly insular as four of the five band members converted to Islam and they moved slowly towards a more improvised sound. Richard Bennett – Tall Tale Tunes (2021)

Richard Bennett - Tall Tale Tunes (2021)

Tall Tale Tunes is the latest instalment in an ongoing series of guitar instrumental masterpieces from Richard Bennett. This project like its predecessors, is a study in the art of touch, tone, taste and timing. The compositions are exquisitely crafted scores with melodies that carry the listener on dreamy flights of fantasy, up and don the fretboards of various guitars that can only be made to sound the way they do in the hands of Richard Bennett.
