Paul Simon – Seven Psalms (2023)

Paul Simon - Seven Psalms (2023)

Seven Psalms comes into focus softly and slowly, with Paul Simon’s circular acoustic guitar figure repeating like a benediction. Religion is certainly on Simon’s mind on Seven Psalms, a collection of seven songs that the singer/songwriter hesitates to call an album; he’s so intent on having the tunes being heard as an interconnected set, he didn’t index the individual segments on either the CD or digital incarnations. Gary Lewis & The Playboys – The Legendary Masters Series (1990) [Remastered]

Gary Lewis & The Playboys - The Legendary Masters Series (1990) [Remastered]

One of the most engaging pop acts of the mid-’60s, The Playboys benefited from strong songwriting (Al Kooper cowrote “This Diamond Ring”) and studio personnel (courtesy of Leon Russell). It’s still light, catchy pop with the enjoyable, unaffected vocals of Gary Lewis on top, and still fun. Dave Berry – Berry’s Best (1989)

Dave Berry - Berry's Best (1989)

Briefly a big star in Britain in the mid-’60s, Dave Berry faced the same dilemma as several other British teen idols of the era: R&B was obviously nearest and dearest to his heart, but he needed to record blatantly pop material to make the hit parade. It was also obvious that Berry was in fact much more suited toward pop ballads than rough-and-tumble R&B, regardless of his personal preferences. Continue reading “Dave Berry – Berry’s Best (1989)”

Early in 1997, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers set up shop at the Fillmore in San Francisco, playing 20 consecutive concerts during a residency that amounted to their only live shows of the year. Being anchored in one spot paradoxically gave them the freedom to move, to not constrain themselves to their standard repertoire.Early in 1997, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers set up shop at the Fillmore in San Francisco, playing 20 consecutive concerts during a residency that amounted to their only live shows of the year. Overkill – Scorched (2023)

Overkill - Scorched (2023)

Light the match! Setting the scene ablaze, the rough and rowdy Overkill have reappeared to bludgeon your ears with their twentieth, that’s right, twentieth studio album: Scorched. For over 3 and a half decades their bottom-line crazy method of thrash has produced some of the most signature moments in the world of metal. Now in the latter half of their career, all the experience is showing face with Scorched as it somehow rings more mature, refined, and embellished with hints of more than just thrash metal.
