But the producers/songwriters (also known for their work with Dead or Alive and Samantha Fox) should definitely be proud of their work on fellow Briton Rick Astley’s often captivating debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody. A doo wop vocal group from the Pittsburgh area, the Vogues started well in the mid-’60s with “You’re the One,” an infectious bit of folk-rock with enough of a British Invasion feel to earn it heavy play on AM radio. “Five O’Clock World” was an even better single, a two-minute blast of timeless release, chronicling the feel of getting off work with the whole night still ahead, that one instant when everything is a possibility and the future has not yet arrived with its schedule of deadlines and pressures. Few pop songs have ever caught that moment with more élan or conviction. Continue reading “The Vogues – Greatest Hits (1988)”

“This is a very important album for the band,” says Steve Howe, Yes’ longest serving member, master guitarist, and producer of Mirror to the Sky, the bands 23rd studio album. “We kept the continuity in the approach we established on The Quest, but we haven’t repeated ourselves. That was the main thing. As Yes did in the seventies from one album to another, we’re growing and moving forward. Continue reading “YES – Mirror To The Sky (2023)”
