An amazing piece of work — a massive eight-CD boxed set that contains every one of Fats Domino’s 1949-1962 Imperial waxings. That’s a tremendous load of one artist, but the legacy of Domino and his partner Dave Bartholomew is so consistently innovative and infectious that it never grows tiresome for a second. Capitol Records compiled a definitive collection of Edith Piaf’s work 30 years after her death; the compilation includes both the well-known (“La Vie en Rose,” “Milord,” “Padam…Padam,” “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien,” etc.) and the hard to find (including “Johnny Tu N’Es Pas un Ange,” “Un Dimanche à Londres,” “À Quoi Ça Sert l’Amour?,” and “A L’Enseigne de la Fille Sans Coeur,” among others). At only two discs (and 44 songs), it’s impossible to portray the complete picture of the Sparrow, but this is a very nice, manageable set that does a pretty good job. It was do or die for Toto on the group’s fourth album, and they rose to the challenge. Largely dispensing with the anonymous studio rock that had characterized their first three releases, the band worked harder on its melodies, made sure its simple lyrics treated romantic subjects, augmented Bobby Kimball’s vocals by having other group members sing, brought in ringers like Timothy B. The Shadows ‎– The Early Years (Expanded Edition): Their Complete Studio Recordings 1959-1966 (1991) [2013, Reissue, Box Set]

To be fair, this six-CD set is really for completists only, since the price tag is likely to put off anyone else. But if you’ve been hooked on the beautiful guitar work of Hank Marvin and the surprisingly muscularity of the band, delving deeper is a very good idea. Not only do you get all the big hits — like “Apache,” “F.B.I.,” and “The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt” (or even the wonderfully named “I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Arthur”) — you get literally everything. “My Only True Friend,” from Southern Blood, Gregg Allman’s final album, is a cipher, much like the man himself — private, reserved, and complex. Though twin, ringing, blues-drenched guitars introduce it, the song just as quickly morphs into a ballad: “You and I both know, this river will surely flow to an end/Keep me in your heart…I hope you’re haunted by the music of my soul…But you and I both know, the road is my only true friend….” The blues guitars cascade in again, adding resonance.
