Sourced from the original master tapes and housed in mini-LP-gatefold-style packaging, Mobile Fidelity’s numbered-edition hybrid SACD of Berlin presents the landmark recording in audiophile quality for the first time. The scope, balance, and reach of Ezrin’s explosive production comes to the fore. As does the ample spaciousness and separation that help give the songs breathing room even when the music builds to an orchestral pitch. Empty Sky was followed by Elton John, a more focused and realized record that deservedly became his first hit. John and Bernie Taupin’s songwriting had become more immediate and successful; in particular, John’s music had become sharper and more diverse, rescuing Taupin’s frequently nebulous lyrics. “Take Me to the Pilot” might not make much sense lyrically, but John had the good sense to ground its willfully cryptic words with a catchy blues-based melody. Compared to the gargantuan Live/1975-85, 2001’s Live in New York City seems like the very definition of restraint, but consider this — not only does it span two discs, it leaves out a considerable portion of the set list from the show and thereby the set list of Springsteen’s celebrated 2000 reunion with the E Street Band. Santana III is an album that undeservingly stands in the shadows behind the towering legend that is the band’s second album, Abraxas. This was also the album that brought guitarist Neal Schon — who was 17 years old — into the original core lineup of Santana. Percussionist Thomas “Coke” Escovedo was brought in to replace (temporarily) José Chepitó Areas, who had suffered a brain aneurysm, yet who recovered quickly and rejoined the band. Recorded by the BBC on March 9, 1972, this previously difficult to find live show captures the classic Mark ll version of Deep Purple in all their incendiary power. This performance — basically the entirety of the then just released Machine Head minus “Pictures of Home” — is easily as good, and at times better than, Made in Japan, recorded five months later. With four gold multi-disc LPs and twice as many hit singles to its credit, Chicago issued its fifth effort, the first to clock in at under an hour. What they lack in quantity, they more than make up for in the wide range of quality of material. The disc erupts with the progressive free-form “A Hit by Varese” — which seems to have been inspired as much by Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s Tarkus (1971) or Yes circa Close to the Edge (1972) as by the Parisian composer for whom it is named. Peter Green is the founder of Fleetwood Mac and his songs have been recorded, covered, and re-interpreted for the past 40 years. As BB King has said, “Peter Green is the only man who ever made me sweat.” Artists such as Ian Anderson, Rory Gallagher, Savoy Brown, Harvey Mandel and others share their interpretations of some of Peter’s greatest songs (Oh Well, Black Magic Women, Albatross, Supernatural and more), making this 15 song collection a must have.
