With Powderhouse Road, Steve Strauss proved himself to be a singer/songwriter of remarkable depth of feeling and sensitivity. This is also true of Just Like Love. The transcription of Shostakovich quartets for larger forces goes back over four decades to Rudolf Barshai’s version of the Eighth. The Amsterdam Sinfonietta’s new disc, however, has less to do with transcription per se than realising the quartets directly for larger forces: other than the writing of a double bass part (by Marijn van Prooij), this is essentially chamber music “writ large”. In the case of the Fourth Quartet, the gains are marginal; in particular, the poise of the slow movement and simmering defiance of the finale are lessened when the music is projected in this way. Born in the vicinity of Cologne, only two years after and some sixty km distant from Beethoven, Johann Wilhelm Wilms was once a musical force to be reckoned with. In Amsterdam, where he lived from the age of 19, his music was actually performed more frequently than Beethoven’s at one period, and his orchestral works were played in such musical centres as Leipzig. Besides chamber music and solo sonatas Wilms composed several symphonies and solo concertos (for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and cello) as well as piano concertos for his own use, five of which were published between 1799 and 1820. (Two more have been lost.) He also appeared regularly as soloist in concertos by other composers. Coleman Hawkins’ 1957 session for Riverside, aside from an oral documentary record in a short-lived series, was his only recording for the label under his name. Yet producer Orrin Keepnews had the good sense to invite the legendary tenor saxophonist to pick his own musicians, and Hawkins surprised him by asking for young boppers J.J.
