Dennis Kolen is a young singer/songwriter from Rotterdam/The Netherlands. People from this small country are traditionally notorious for being adept travelers. Wherever Fate places them on the ocean-going vessels of old or their modern mobile home counterparts they are courageous people. Dennis Kolen had the courage to believe in Stockfisch, and that’s why he found the Northeim Goldmine. Continue reading “Dennis Kolen – Northeim | Goldmine (2011) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Carl Cleves and Parissa Bouas are a duo from Australia whose fame Down Under is considerable. Their album on Stockfisch is called “Out of Australia”; while these three words certainly bear no small resemblance to the famous “Out of Africa”, you don’t have to be exactly a linguist to deduce that “Out of” is the trademark of an intensely emotional liaison with a country. The truth of this becomes more evident as each track of this disc unfolds. Continue reading “Carl Cleves & Parissa Bouas – Out Of Australia (2010) [CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Nyro peaked early, and Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, just her second album, remains her best. It’s not only because it contains the original versions of no less than three songs that were big hits for other artists: “Sweet Blindness” (covered by the 5th Dimension), “Stoned Soul Picnic” (also covered by the 5th Dimension), and “Eli’s Comin'” (done by Three Dog Night). Coleman Hawkins’ 1957 session for Riverside, aside from an oral documentary record in a short-lived series, was his only recording for the label under his name. Yet producer Orrin Keepnews had the good sense to invite the legendary tenor saxophonist to pick his own musicians, and Hawkins surprised him by asking for young boppers J.J. Johnson and Idrees Sulieman in addition to the potent rhythm section of Hank Jones, Oscar Pettiford, Barry Galbraith, and Jo Jones. For listeners who had caught up with the Cardigans on their breakout album, Life, the group’s third album was a confusing pastiche which included several conventional pop songs, but also added tracks with left-field arrangements and some (comparatively) disturbing lyrics. In reality, however, the group had simply returned to the mood and feel of their debut album. Continue reading “The Cardigans – First Band On The Moon (1996) [2022 Release, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Lenny Kravitz’s greatest gift is that he’s a master synthesist, pulling together different sounds and styles from eras past to create a sound that isn’t necessarily blazingly original, but fresh due to his craft and sheer mastery of the studio. Since he was an unabashed classicist, his records often suffered the brunt of nasty criticism, but they were often very good, particularly early in his career before he indulged in the mannerisms of guitar-blasting stadium rock. Blood, Sweat & Tears had a hard act to follow in recording their third album. Nevertheless, BS&T constructed a convincing, if not quite as impressive, companion to their previous hit. David Clayton-Thomas remained an enthusiastic blues shouter, and the band still managed to put together lively arrangements, especially on the Top 40 hits “Hi-De-Ho” and “Lucretia Mac Evil.” Elsewhere, they re-created the previous album’s jazzing up of Laura Nyro (“He’s a Runner”) and Traffic (“40,000 Headmen”), although their pretentiousness, on the extended “Symphony/Sympathy for the Devil,” Continue reading “Blood, Sweat & Tears – Blood, Sweat & Tears 3 (1970) [2003, MFSL Remastered, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”
