Grand Funk Railroad continued to move further into the pop/rock mainstream with this hit album. They are aided considerably in this aim by the ultra-slick production of Jimmy Ienner, a producer best known for his work with the Raspberries: songs like “Runnin'” and “Memories” boast rich yet punchy horn and string arrangements that beef up the group’s sound without softening its energetic edge. The last great “tragedy in music” of the reign of Louis XIV, Alcione, is a total spectacle at the crossroads of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, from which it takes the mythological source, its praise of the sovereign’s glory, and the literary requirement to combine choreography and stage movements. Jordi Savall, rediscoverer of Marais’ work, brings this creative freedom back to life for Alcione’s first stage production in Paris since 1771. Egon Bondy’s Happy Hearts Club Banned is an album by Czech underground band The Plastic People of the Universe. It was recorded in 1974/75, mainly at Houska Castle, enabled by the castle’s then warden Svatopluk Karásek, with some songs being recorded in Prague. The album could not be officially released and distributed under the former Communist regime in Czechoslovakia; instead fans duplicated tapes with one another, often resulting in poor technical quality. It was released in 1978 in France by SCOPA Invisible Production. Alexander Scriabin’s development as a composer was marked by dramatic changes in his style, from the rather direct Romanticism of his Symphony No. 1 in E major to the more harmonically complex and mystical music of his middle and late phases, represented here by the Poem of Ecstasy (Symphony No. 4). This multichannel hybrid SACD recording by Mikhail Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra presents both works in luscious state-of-the-art sound, which brings out the richness of Scriabin’s orchestration and puts both pieces in a spacious acoustic that allows them to have their proper impact. Irish songwriter, composer, vocalist, musician and poet, Brian Flanagan has worked with artists from diverse musical backgrounds such as Michael Flatley, Nadine Coyle, Eric Bibb, Nathan Carter, Finbar Furey, Brian Kennedy and Sharon Shannon. Brian is renowned for his ability to write to order, emotionally charged pieces that are immediately engaging. Love, loss, self-pity, recognizing chances and taking them – or not, almost mystical nature experiences, life-changing encounters, art and artists, environmental protection, human rights: it is truly a broad, moving and very current spectrum of themes which Irish singer-songwriter Brian Flanagan has worked through in the eleven tracks on this Audiophile SACD. Capturing some of their chart-topping smashes and other key tracks, Tears for Fears marks a monumental career with their collection Tears Roll Down: Greatest Hits 82-92. Toward the end of the praise surrounding their third album, 1991’s Seeds of Love, Curt Smith left the band. Roland Orzabal was left to sail the ship alone, and the strong success dwindled years later. However, this dozen-track compilation showcases some of the band’s early tracks heavily dominated by pulsating bass drops and heavy synth beats. Playing a rather brilliant Steinway D instrument at the Academy of Music, Stockholm, in 2003, British pianist Freddy Kempf (b. 1977) makes a lyrical and aggressive contribution to the long line of virtuosos who traverse these familiar sets of etudes. Engineer Jens Braun pushes the sonic envelope to the brink, with the C# Minor, Op. 10, No. 4 threatening to shatter at the extreme ends, but it all works nicely. The whole disc, in fact, is an audiophile model for rich, pointed, and balanced piano sound. Continue reading “Chopin / Kempf – Chopin: Études Opp. 10 & 25 (2004) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”
