Even back in the early ’50s, Columbia Records took Duke Ellington seriously enough to place this album on its prestigious Masterworks label, heretofore reserved mostly for highbrow classical music and Broadway shows (later in the decade, though, it was retitled Hi-Fi Ellington Uptown and reissued on the pop series with an additional piece, “The Controversial Suite”). This 1954 studio date, a self-titled album recorded for Emarcy, was later reissued as Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown to denote the involvement of one of the top trumpeters of the day. Vaughan sings nine intimate standards with a band including Brown on trumpet, Herbie Mann on flute, and Paul Quinichette on tenor, each of which have plenty of space for solos (most of the songs are close to the five-minute mark) Continue reading “Sarah Vaughan – Sarah Vaughan (1954) [2003, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

This first complete studio recording of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, made between 1958 and 1966, was a groundbreaking technical and artistic achievement, the most ambitious and intricately involved opera recording project of the 20th century. Produced for Decca by John Culshaw, whose vision and untiring devotion brought the gargantuan project to completion, the 14 ½-hour release set a new standard for opera recordings. If Toto’s musical advantage was that, since its members continued to play on many of the successful records made in L.A., its own music was popular almost by definition, its disadvantage was that it made little attempt to seek an individual musical signature — a particular style, say, or a distinctive singer (Bobby Kimball was not it) who could make its records immediately identifiable. APO presents what must be the greatest Stevie Ray Vaughan tribute collection ever made. Vaughan single-handedly ignited the blues revival of the ’80s. His eclectic and fiery style bridged the gap between blues and rock like no other artist had since the late ’60s. Vaughan’s tragic death in 1990 only emphasized his influence on both the blues and American rock & roll. Texas Hurricane features six of Vaughan’s classic albums – Texas Flood, Couldn’t Stand the Weather, Soul to Soul, In Step, Family Style and The Sky Is Cryin’ – specially remastered for SACD by Sterling Sound.
