Several decades after his childhood hangouts in famed Belfast record store Atlantic Records, Van Morrison revisits his love of the genre with his new album Moving on Skiffle. Launching with lead single “Streamline Train,” the 23-track album takes a homemade style that exploded across Britain in the mid-1950s and infuses it with sophistication, soulfulness, and an underlying message on the importance of freedom and living on your own terms, his lifetime philosophy. Willie Dixon once told Wild Child Butler, “You are the moan of the suffering woman, the groan of the dying man. You ain’t nothing but the blues.” Here’s a man who’s been heavily praised by Dixon, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Jimmy Rogers just to name a few; a man who those blues legends were proud to accompany. As traditional as the blues on this album are, there’s no mistaking a Wild Child tune. Continue reading “Wild Child Butler – Sho’ ‘Nuff (2001) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

This was the first such presentation of a Delta blues musician done by Columbia, which seemed like a pretty hip label at the time, since they had both Bob Dylan and Paul Revere and the Raiders. The man’s picture on the front is mesmerizing, in a word; the white shirt, black string tie, and silver steel guitar just adding to the excitement. Bitter-sweet melancholy, but also a trace of cynicism gets hold of the listener at the same time. Continue reading “Steve Strauss – Just like Love (2005) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”
