From the reign of Henry VIII and onwards, the lute and its practitioners enjoyed the patronage of the very highest English society. Henry played the lute himself, as did his daughter Elizabeth I, who during one period employed as many as five lutenists at her court. In 1603, when she was succeeded on the throne by James I, the tradition was maintained: with his appointment of John Dowland the king increased the number of royal lutenists, while his queen, Anne of Denmark, played the lute herself. The transcription of Shostakovich quartets for larger forces goes back over four decades to Rudolf Barshai’s version of the Eighth. The Amsterdam Sinfonietta’s new disc, however, has less to do with transcription per se than realising the quartets directly for larger forces: other than the writing of a double bass part (by Marijn van Prooij), this is essentially chamber music “writ large”. In the case of the Fourth Quartet, the gains are marginal; in particular, the poise of the slow movement and simmering defiance of the finale are lessened when the music is projected in this way. Born in the vicinity of Cologne, only two years after and some sixty km distant from Beethoven, Johann Wilhelm Wilms was once a musical force to be reckoned with. In Amsterdam, where he lived from the age of 19, his music was actually performed more frequently than Beethoven’s at one period, and his orchestral works were played in such musical centres as Leipzig. Besides chamber music and solo sonatas Wilms composed several symphonies and solo concertos (for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and cello) as well as piano concertos for his own use, five of which were published between 1799 and 1820. (Two more have been lost.) He also appeared regularly as soloist in concertos by other composers.
