This SACD (DSD) sampler from Concord Jazz has stunning audio, so there’s that. But beyond there is also and nice mix of varying jazz tracks taken from previously released albums within their label. Favorites will certainly depend on what you like as songs range from the opening reggae infused track, “Reggae-Later” by Monty Alexander’s Ivory & Steel to “The Real Blues,” a live recording by The Ray Brown Trio to a solo piano tune called “Silent Pool” which closes out the album. Might as well admit my bias: Jacintha has become one of my favorite living female vocalists. I initially came across her work when my friend Paul Seydor, a senior writer for The Absolute Sound, gave me a copy of her first Groove Note album Here’s to Ben, a tribute to legendary tenor saxophonist Ben Webster. When Ying Tan told me that Jacintha’s second album for Groove Note would be a collection of Johnny Mercer songs, I felt a quickening of the pulse. Here surely would be a recital of rare sympathy: one of the most purely romantic of all lyricists interpreted by one of the most ravishingly beautiful voices to come along in jazz and popular music this last quarter century. When an international artist records an English-language album, crossover is usually in the cards. For Caetano Veloso, however, it’s an entirely different matter. The statesman of Brazilian pop, a musical giant who is on track to record more in his fifth decade of artistic striving than in any other (not to mention his accompanying exploits in literature), Veloso has no need to begin an American campaign. He also has shown no wish to. The daughter of Ravi Shankar, Jones grew up in Texas with her mother. While she always found the music of Billie Holiday and Bill Evans both intriguing and comforting, she didn’t really explore jazz until attending Dallas’ Booker T.
