Chaos & Colour, the energetic and triumphant 25th studio album from British hard rock legends and progenators Uriah Heep, bristles with explosive classic rock guitars, supreme harmonies, and Heep’s famously generous keyboard foundation. Led by founding member Mick Box, it is no surprise that themes of light, love and, ultimately, positivity are constant through the eleven tracks. This box set is the definitive version of the album, containing all the shows that make up the record newly mixed by Ben Findlay from the original multi-tracks, mastered by Andy Pearce and overseen by Guitarist Scott Gorham. It goes to dispel the rumors that the album was extensively overdubbed in the studio and it’s presented here as the shows were intended with the rawness of a band, they were at the top of their game night after night. Billy J. Kramer was one of the weaker yet more enduringly popular of the early acts to emerge from Liverpool, following in the wake of the Beatles. But even with a career on the pop charts that extended a year past the thickest part of the Merseybeat boom, the idea of a 121-song four-CD compilation of Kramer’s work is still overkill in almost any context. The original nine-song double-LP In Concert was the first “new” Eric Clapton release in well over a year, and the first to show up in the wake of The History of Eric Clapton compilation (which, in turn, had helped transform the earlier Dominos album Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs into a belated hit). White Skies is a UK based AOR band formed by former Samson/First Strike vocalist Mick White, former Ya Ya guitarist Ray Callcut and former Double Cross/Dante Fox keyboard player Pete Lakin. Just prior to the start of the pandemic in 2020 Mick and Ray (who were old friends from the eighties) had discussed the idea of writing a pure AOR album very much in the style of the giants of the genre Journey, Foreigner and Toto. Never one for subtlety, Sammy Hagar calls his grappling with the pandemic album Crazy Times — a title that speaks equally to the personal and the world at large. Hagar does spend some time contemplating “Childhood’s End” and “Father Time,” but make no mistake, he’s still a guy who will jam out to “Funky Feng Shui” and turn Elvis Costello’s “Pump It Up” into an anthem for drinking beer.
