This album was the group’s magnum opus in the perception of many onlookers and fans, and it still plays well, though its flaws are more evident than they were at the time. The “Song of Scheherazade,” really a suite for the group supported by the London Symphony Orchestra and a chorus, started with guitarist-composer Michael Dunford, who had a personal fascination with the medieval literary work Tales of 1,001 Arabian Nights Continue reading “Renaissance – Scheherazade And Other Stories (1975) [1983, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

Over the course of their first three late-’70s albums, Foreigner had firmly established themselves (along with Journey and Styx) as one of the top AOR bands of the era. But the band was still looking for that grand slam of a record that would push them to the very top of the heap. Released in 1981, 4 would be that album. In producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange — fresh off his massive success with AC/DC’s Back in Black — guitarist and all-around mastermind Mick Jones found both the catalyst to achieve this and his perfect musical soulmate. One of the great new wave/early MTV records, She’s So Unusual is a giddy mix of self-confidence, effervescent popcraft, unabashed sentimentality, subversiveness, and clever humor. In short, it’s a multifaceted portrait of a multifaceted talent, an artist that’s far more clever than her thin, deliberately girly voice would indicate. When the prevailing guitar jingle of “Mr. Jones” cascaded over radio in the early ’90s, it was a sure sign that the Counting Crows were a musical force to be reckoned with. Their debut album, August and Everything After, burst at the seams with both dominant pop harmonies and rich, hearty ballads, all thanks to lead singer Adam Duritz. The lone guitar work of “Mr. Jones” coupled with the sweet, in-front pull of Duritz’s voice kicked off the album in full force. Style Council’s first proper album Cafe Bleu was one of their better efforts, but it indicated the group’s fatal flaw — a tendency to be too eclectic and overambitious. Amidst the lazy jazz instrumentals, many of them courtesy of Mick Talbot, Paul Weller inserted several solid soul-tinged pop songs, including “My Ever Changing Moods,” “Headstart for Happiness,” “You’re the Best Thing,” and “Here’s One That Got Away.” However, that doesn’t excuse the rap experiment, “A Gospel.” The album was later released with a slightly different running order as My Ever Changing Moods in the U.S.; the American edition included the U.K. hit “A Solid Bond in Your Heart.” Continue reading “The Style Council – Café Bleu (1984) [2010, Japan, Remastered, Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Rock icon and multi-instrumentalist Roger Taylor introduces his new solo album Outsider. With much of Outsider recorded during lockdown, this new album finds Taylor in a reflective mood, conveying a palpable sense of isolation, concerns over the passing of time, and tellingly dedicated “to all the outsiders, those who feel left on the sidelines”. A highly personal project, Outsider’s instrumentation is almost entirely performed by Taylor, with his vocals matching the mood-piece atmosphere. The Police never really broke up, they just stopped working together — largely because they just couldn’t stand playing together anymore and partially because Sting was itching to establish himself as a serious musician/songwriter on his own terms. Anxious to shed the mantle of pop star, he camped out at Eddy Grant’s studio, picked up the guitar, and raided Wynton Marsalis’ band for his new combo — thereby instantly consigning his solo debut, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, to the critical shorthand of Sting’s jazz record. Neil Young had just released his third solo album After the Gold Rush a few months before he played Carnegie Hall in December of 1970, where he offered up a new set of introspective songs that were relatively toned down when compared to the stomping full-band jamming of 1969’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. This would just be the beginning of a run of classic albums that continued throughout the ’70s, and both sides of Young’s musical personality — the hushed and patient songwriter side, and the side that tended toward rugged rock — were integral to how that peerless run played out.
