The English music press can never let anyone be. They’re always quick to hail the next big thing, and in this case, the next big Coldplay is Keane. (Lowgold briefly held that title upon its debut release in 2001, but U.K. critics rushed to give that crown to someone else.) Keane haven’t positioned themselves to be kings of anything, though, let alone the next Coldplay. Sure, Coldplay’s biggest hit to date, “Clocks,” included only pianos, and they released the Safety EP on Fierce Panda, which is also Keane’s label, but those are the only things Keane have in common with Coldplay. Brian Wilson Presents Smile (also referred to as Smile or the abbreviation BWPS) is the fifth studio album by Brian Wilson, released in September 2004. Its production began as a series of concert performances which were then adapted for a studio album, as well as a 2005 direct-to-video concert film of the same title. The album received great acclaim and earned Wilson his first Grammy Award, later being featured in several “greatest albums” lists. Upon release, it peaked at number 7 on the UK Albums Chart. Black Rose: A Rock Legend would prove to be Thin Lizzy’s last true classic album (and last produced by Tony Visconti). Guitarist Brian Robertson was replaced by Gary Moore prior to the album’s recording. Moore had already been a member of the band in the early ’70s and served as a tour fill-in for Robertson in 1977, and he fits in perfectly with Lizzy’s heavy, dual-guitar attack. After successfully establishing themselves as one of America’s best commercial progressive rock bands of the late ’70s with albums like The Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight, Chicago’s Styx had taken a dubious step towards pop overkill with singer Dennis DeYoung’s ballad “Babe.” The centerpiece of 1979’s uneven Cornerstone album, the number one single sowed the seeds of disaster for the group by pitching DeYoung’s increasingly mainstream ambitions against the group’s more conservative songwriters, Tommy Shaw and James “JY” Young. After a couple of years of relentless touring, Humble Pie capitalized on their loyal U.S. following to capture the market with this, their fifth studio album. Although lead guitarist Peter Frampton was replaced by Clem Clemson — an excellent player — the band remained essentially the same. Led by singer/guitarist Steve Marriott’s soulful wail, the group enjoyed a huge hit from this record, “30 Days in the Hole” — the track which defined the Pie’s not-so-subtle appeal. Roger Waters’ tours of the U.S. during the summers of 1999 and 2000 were a pleasant surprise, since the reclusive rocker had not toured since 1987. In his liner notes to this two-CD set drawn from those performances, Waters does not shy away from discussing his antipathy to big concert venues.
