Brothers in Arms charted at number one worldwide, spending 10 weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart (between 18 January and 22 March 1986), nine weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States, and 34 weeks at number one on the Australian Album Chart. David Gilmour’s two concerts assembled for Live at Pompeii mark the first time that the amphitheater has hosted a rock gig since Pink Floyd played there in 1971. They didn’t play for an audience, however, they were filmed for Adrian Maben’s documentary Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii. Gilmour’s gigs — some 45 years after Floyd — bests their gig historically: It hosted a paying audience assembled from all over the globe, and it was the first time an audience had occupied the site since 79 AD. In a sense, nearly every album Eric Clapton recorded after 1970 has been a tribute to J.J. Cale. On that first solo album, Clapton cut a cover of Cale’s “After Midnight” and while he was under the spell of Delaney Bramlett for that album, soon enough Slowhand began drifting toward the laconic shuffle that was Cale’s stock in trade. Clapton never hesitated to credit Cale, dropping his name in interviews, turning “Cocaine” into a modern standard, even going so far as to record an entire duet album with the Oklahoma troubadour called The Road to Escondido in 2006. A commercial hit, the album reached the #3 slot on the Billboard 200 chart and also features two of the band’s biggest songs: “Frankenstein” (#1 on the Billboard Hot 100) and “Free Ride” (#14 on that same chart). Musically, the album features a mixture of blues rock and pop rock influences in a generally carefree, upbeat sound. Though a bit over the top, this album was still powerful and surprisingly melodic, and managed to be quite bluesy and soulful even as the band overhauled chestnuts by James Brown and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. “Spontaneous Apple Creation” is a willfully histrionic, atonal song that gives Captain Beefheart a run for his money.
