The story is well-known: south Wales pop group, the Iveys, are discovered by the Beatles’ aide-de-camp Mal Evans, who not only signs them to Apple Records but produces their first sessions. Their first single, the glorious Bee Gees-like ballad “Maybe Tomorrow,” is released in November 1968, yet it unaccountably stiffs. Disheartened, Apple shelves the planned U.S./U.K. release of the Iveys’ debut album, though it does eventually sneak out in Japan and Germany. Out on the road in the 2020s, the Doobie Brothers feature Michael McDonald, but when it comes time for the group to cut a record, the band whittles down to the trio of Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons, and John McFee. Naturally, this means Liberté — the Doobies’ first album of new original material since 2010’s World Gone Crazy — sounds closer to a refurbished version of Toulouse Street or The Captain and Me than Takin’ It to the Streets; there’s no funky soft rock or smooth blue-eyed soul, just a lot of straight-ahead rock & roll. When it was released, Trans was Neil Young’s most baffling album. He had employed a vocoder to synthesize his voice on five of the album’s nine tracks, resulting in disembodied singing, the lyrics nearly impossible to decipher without the lyric sheet. And even when you read the words, “Computer Age,” “We R in Control,” “Transformer Man,” “Computer Cowboy,” and “Sample and Hold” seemed like a vague mishmash of high-tech jargon. Another captivating entry into their year-specific archival series, Grapefruit Records offers up Beyond the Pale Horizon: The British Progressive Pop Sounds of 1972. Arguing that 1972 was the year that British music finally broke free of the ’60s and began to innovate, this heaping three-disc anthology boasts a typically eclectic array of icons, cult faves, and everything in between. While “progressive” may be the imperative term here, this is by no means a prog rock compilation even if bands like Van der Graaf Generator, Uriah Heep, and Yes are all well-represented.
