Arriving in 1958, just a couple of years after skiffle swept Britain, Richard was the first English singer to approximate the hip-shaking rebellion of American rock & roll with his 1958 debut single “Move It.” A smash hit right out of the gate, “Move It” kicked off an astonishing five decades’ worth of hits (as of 2014, his last time in the U.K. Top 10 was in 2008, when “Thank You for a Lifetime” went to number three). Over the course of their first three late-’70s albums, Foreigner had firmly established themselves (along with Journey and Styx) as one of the top AOR bands of the era. But the band was still looking for that grand slam of a record that would push them to the very top of the heap. Released in 1981, 4 would be that album. Although at 17 tracks totaling a mere 41 minutes, there is enough room to almost double the material, this is a well-chosen selection of Pye-era (1963-’66) music from the British Invasion band many ranked just behind the Beatles for melodic invention. Sure, there are plenty of Searchers’ compilations on the market with more songs at a cheaper price, but there aren’t any that sound this spectacular. The Audio Fidelity label is known for the pristine care they take sonically on their reissues and this is a perfect example of how the extra time, money and effort in mastering makes an enormous difference. Neil Young + Promise Of The Real announce a new live album, Noise & Flowers, that captures the group in all their glory on their 2019 European tour. The release will be accompanied by a similarly titled concert film that’s included in the album’s 2xLP+CD Deluxe Edition. Noise & Flowers documents a 9-date tour that began just two weeks after Young’s lifetime friend and manager of more than 50 years, Elliot Roberts, passed away at age 76. Performing alongside a photograph of Roberts taped to his road case, Young approached each show as a celebratory memorial service to honor his late friend. It’s a trek the legendary singer/songwriter describes as “wondrous.” “Playing in his memory [made it] one of the most special tours ever,” Young says in the album’s liner notes. Funny that the much-touted “reunion/comeback” album Steel Wheels followed Dirty Work by just three years, while it took the Stones five years to turn out its sequel, Voodoo Lounge — a time frame that seems much more appropriate for a “comeback.” To pile on the irony, Voodoo Lounge feels more like a return to form than its predecessor, even if it’s every bit as calculated and Bill Wyman has flown the coup.
