When asked about his favorite instrument, Johann Wilhelm Wilms could only have answered: the orchestra. This statement probably sounds rather strange for a composer who, as a young pianist, was the number one among the piano virtuosos and teachers of his adopted city of Amsterdam and who was also appreciated as a flutist for decades; however, it is at least as plausible if one listens to one of his works for orchestra: every page of a Wilms score also sings of its author’s desire to have his musical thoughts represented by an ensemble of selectly capable instrumentalists. To Wilms, who openly acknowledged the primacy of instrumental over vocal music, the observation of the eminent conductor (and composer) Igor Markevitch is particularly true: ‘The greater the masters were, the more they wrote not for the instrument but for the man who animates it.’ Wilms’ extensive knowledge of the specific possibilities of all orchestral instruments corresponded with his knowledge of the professional and human qualities of their players in his musical environment. Thus he did not simply write beautiful passages into the voices of his orchestral colleagues, but often entrusted them with role-like tasks within the web of dialogue in his scores. It was only understandable when such exposed musicians also requested tailor-made solo concertos from him. Thus, in the course of less than twenty years, some fifteen concertos and concerto-like works for one or more orchestral instruments came together. Most of them remained unprinted and are lost to this day. Even of the eight or so works for piano and orchestra that Wilms wrote for his own use in just under three decades, only the five printed concertos have survived.
