Ben E. King’s third album is a little short in running time but very high in quality, in terms of the dozen songs here. The title track was the selling point, but couldn’t help but be seduced by the exquisite production of “Ecstasy” and “On the Horizon,” the latter making about as fine use of harps and an ethereal chorus as one imagines possible — and when the strings come in, violins and cellos alternately, the sheer beauty of the track just overflows. “Show Me the Way to Your Heart” isn’t too far behind Continue reading “Ben E. Although it would have been interesting to hear Nat King Cole play some piano and perhaps accompany a vocal by George Shearing instead of exclusively the other way around, this session was a big success. Cole is in prime form on such tunes as “September Song,” “Pick Yourself Up,” and “Serenata.” Shearing’s accompaniment is tasteful and lightly swinging, and the string arrangements help to accentuate the romantic moods. Oscar Peterson / Michel Legrand – Trail Of Dreams: A Canadian Suite (2000) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]

The Trail of Dreams suite, composed by the country’s most famous jazz musician, was commissioned to commemorate the trail. Oscar Peterson has explored nationalistic themes before, and, like his 1964 Canadiana suite, this one is inspired by the changing landscape and shifting cultures encountered in crossing so vast a country, from the Celtic reel of “Dancetron” to a minuet. Michel LeGrand provides string arrangements for Peterson’s themes, expanding and supporting the work of Peterson’s quartet: guitarist Ulf Wakenius, bassist Niels Henning-Orsted Pedersen, and drummer Martin Drew.
