Unlike the other two Keith Jarrett trio recordings from January 1983, this collaboration with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette does not feature standards. The trio performs the 30-minute “Flying” and a 6-minute “Prism,” both of them Jarrett originals. “Flying,” which has several sections, keeps one’s interest througout while the more concise “Prism” has a beautiful melody. It is a nice change to hear Jarrett (who normally plays unaccompanied) interacting with a trio of superb players. A 7″ and 12″ single of ‘Bolero’ (the tune) was released in the UK by popular demand in the light of the success of the movie “10” starring Bo Derek and Dudley Moore. It actually hit the Top 75! Tomita says that this is his favourite album. It was presented to his daughter on her marriage. His daughter’s name and that of her fianceé were written using grass in the picture of ‘Daphnis et Chloé’. Composer Mike Oldfield rose to fame on the success of Tubular Bells, an eerie, album-length conceptual piece employed to stunning effect in the film The Exorcist. Born May 15, 1953, in Reading, England, Oldfield began his professional career at the age of 14, forming the Sallyangie folk duo with his sister Sally; a year later, the siblings issued their debut LP, Children of the Sun. By the age of 16, he was playing bass with Soft Machine founder Kevin Ayers’ group the Whole World alongside experimental classical arranger David Bedford and avant-garde jazz saxophonist Lol Coxhill; within months, Oldfield was tapped to become the band’s lead guitarist prior to recording the 1971 LP Shooting at the Moon. It was pretty clear that Billy Joel had run out of steam by 1993’s River of Dreams. He had shown signs of wearing on its predecessor, Storm Front, but his trademark melodic gift disappeared on River of Dreams and his words, even performances, were bone-tired — he even called the last song “The Last Song (No More Words).” So, it was no great surprise that he did not rush to record a follow-up, and when he started murmuring toward the end of the decade that perhaps he wasn’t interested in pop music anymore, nobody who paid attention could have been surprised. The album cover artwork was taken on the front steps of 142 Mercer Street, just north of the intersection of Mercer and Prince Street in the SoHo neighborhood in New York City.
