This set had me worried. Some of the group improvising is so sparse and meandering that it almost sounds as if the musicians are lost, or too shy to play much. However, just when one is ready to give up on this project as a lost effort, one of the musicians gets the momentum flowing and the others follow with their own comments. Monty Alexander has always been a fine jazz pianist, but in recent years he has received more popular acclaim for interpreting the reggae music of his native Jamaica. While his reggae efforts are well done, straight-ahead jazz and interpreting standards are really his forte. For The Good Life, Alexander has chosen to riff on tunes from the repertoire of Tony Bennett Continue reading “Monty Alexander – The Good Life: Monty Alexander Plays The Songs Of Tony Bennett (2008) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Monty Alexander follows up his tribute to Tony Bennett with an homage to another classic jazz singer, Nat King Cole. Also recorded in New York City at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the same trio of Chicagoans Lorin Cohen on bass and drummer George Fludas, the veteran pianist seems more in his element with this artist’s repertoire that sharply defined his personal sound and thinking about populist jazz. Despite being the premiere of heavy metal, Jeff Beck’s Truth has never quite carried its reputation the way the early albums by Led Zeppelin did, or even Cream’s two most popular LPs, mostly as a result of the erratic nature of the guitarist’s subsequent work. Time has muted some of its daring, radical nature, elements of which were appropriated by practically every metal band (and most arena rock bands) that followed. Continuing with the same group lineup as on Rough & Ready, Jeff Beck Group was slagged off by critics for Steve Cropper’s admittedly lazy production. However, several of the songs hold up masterfully, including the skronky “Ice Cream Cakes,” the superlative redo of Don Nix’s “Going Down,” and the beautifully sad and wistful instrumental, “Definitely Maybe.” Continue reading “Jeff Beck Group – Jeff Beck Group (1972) [2015, Audio Fidelity Remastered, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”
