Given all the extracurricular projects members of Los Lobos pursued during the three years separating Colossal Head and its followup, it’s not surprising that they’ve decided to show off what they’ve learned on This Time, resulting in a record that vacillates between songcraft and sonic sculptures. Over the course of their first three late-’70s albums, Foreigner had firmly established themselves (along with Journey and Styx) as one of the top AOR bands of the era. Foreigner continued its platinum winning streak on Head Games, the band’s third album. By the time Head Games was released, FM radio had fully embraced bands like Foreigner, Journey, and Boston, whose slick hard rock was tough enough to appeal to suburban teens, but smooth enough to be non-threatening to their parents. Tailor-made for the airwaves, “Dirty White Boy” and “Head Games” kept Foreigner at the top of the arena rock heap as the decade came to a close; and the supergroup’s successes would continue well into the ’80s. Although at 17 tracks totaling a mere 41 minutes, there is enough room to almost double the material, this is a well-chosen selection of Pye-era (1963-’66) music from the British Invasion band many ranked just behind the Beatles for melodic invention. Sure, there are plenty of Searchers’ compilations on the market with more songs at a cheaper price, but there aren’t any that sound this spectacular. The Audio Fidelity label is known for the pristine care they take sonically on their reissues and this is a perfect example of how the extra time, money and effort in mastering makes an enormous difference. Neil Young + Promise Of The Real announce a new live album, Noise & Flowers, that captures the group in all their glory on their 2019 European tour. The release will be accompanied by a similarly titled concert film that’s included in the album’s 2xLP+CD Deluxe Edition. Noise & Flowers documents a 9-date tour that began just two weeks after Young’s lifetime friend and manager of more than 50 years, Elliot Roberts, passed away at age 76. Performing alongside a photograph of Roberts taped to his road case, Young approached each show as a celebratory memorial service to honor his late friend. It’s a trek the legendary singer/songwriter describes as “wondrous.” “Playing in his memory [made it] one of the most special tours ever,” Young says in the album’s liner notes.
