The transcription of Shostakovich quartets for larger forces goes back over four decades to Rudolf Barshai’s version of the Eighth. The Amsterdam Sinfonietta’s new disc, however, has less to do with transcription per se than realising the quartets directly for larger forces: other than the writing of a double bass part (by Marijn van Prooij), this is essentially chamber music “writ large”. In the case of the Fourth Quartet, the gains are marginal; in particular, the poise of the slow movement and simmering defiance of the finale are lessened when the music is projected in this way. Dennis Kolen is a young singer/songwriter from Rotterdam/The Netherlands. People from this small country are traditionally notorious for being adept travelers. Wherever Fate places them on the ocean-going vessels of old or their modern mobile home counterparts they are courageous people. Dennis Kolen had the courage to believe in Stockfisch, and that’s why he found the Northeim Goldmine. Continue reading “Dennis Kolen – Northeim | Goldmine (2011) [Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Carl Cleves and Parissa Bouas are a duo from Australia whose fame Down Under is considerable. Their album on Stockfisch is called “Out of Australia”; while these three words certainly bear no small resemblance to the famous “Out of Africa”, you don’t have to be exactly a linguist to deduce that “Out of” is the trademark of an intensely emotional liaison with a country. The truth of this becomes more evident as each track of this disc unfolds. Continue reading “Carl Cleves & Parissa Bouas – Out Of Australia (2010) [CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

Former Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour is not prolific. Rattle That Lock is only his fourth solo studio album (though it follows his late band’s final album, The Endless River, by only ten months). Gilmour recorded some 35 songs for this set, some dating back 18 years. Trimming them to ten couldn’t have been easy. Falling somewhere between the pop sensibilities of Ten Summoner’s Tales and the searching ambition of The Soul Cages, Mercury Falling is one of Sting’s tighter records, even if it fails to compel as much as his previous solo albums. Though he doesn’t flaunt his jazz aspirations as he did in the mid-’80s, Mercury Falling feels more serious than The Dream of the Blue Turtles, primarily because of its reserved, high-class production and execution. If Dream of the Blue Turtles was an unabashedly pretentious affair, it looks positively lighthearted in comparison to Sting’s sophomore effort, Nothing Like the Sun, one of the most doggedly serious pop albums ever recorded. This is an album where the only up-tempo track, the only trifle — the cheerfully stiff white-funk “We’ll Be Together” Continue reading “Sting – …Nothing Like the Sun (1987) [Official Digital Release] [2022 Release, Hi-Res]”

Nyro peaked early, and Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, just her second album, remains her best. Coleman Hawkins’ 1957 session for Riverside, aside from an oral documentary record in a short-lived series, was his only recording for the label under his name. Yet producer Orrin Keepnews had the good sense to invite the legendary tenor saxophonist to pick his own musicians, and Hawkins surprised him by asking for young boppers J.J. Johnson and Idrees Sulieman in addition to the potent rhythm section of Hank Jones, Oscar Pettiford, Barry Galbraith, and Jo Jones.
