The group’s definitive album, and one of the most daring debut albums ever recorded by anybody. At the time, it blew all of the progressive/psychedelic competition (the Moody Blues, the Nice, etc.) out of the running, although it was almost too good for the band’s own good — it took King Crimson nearly four years to come up with a record as strong or concise. If the 12″ single of Herb Alpert’s “Rise” hadn’t taken over the charts the way it did back in 1979, one wonders if anyone would have gotten around to checking out the Tijuana Brass, or if Alpert would have gone down in the books as the guy who had a number one with a Burt Bacharach tune (“This Guy’s in Love with You”). Instead, the cut energized the entire dance club generation, with DJs looking for new grooves, and it even ended up being used by Sean “Puffy” Combs on the Notorious B.I.G.’s Hypnotise, albeit in a drastically re-morphed form. Let the Bad Times Roll is the tenth studio album by American rock band the Offspring, released on April 16, 2021. Produced by Bob Rock, it is the band’s first release on Concord Records, and their first studio album in almost nine years since Days Go By (2012), marking the longest gap between two Offspring studio albums. Let the Bad Times Roll also marks the Offspring’s debut with Todd Morse, who replaced original bassist Greg K. in 2019. After gaining some recognition from the success of the band’s previous album, Bachman-Turner Overdrive got around to recording Not Fragile. Not only had one of the three Bachman brothers (Tim, the rhythm guitarist) left the band to BTO’s advantage, but Randy Bachman and C.F. Turner had clearly grown musically. To the album’s benefit, most of the material on Not Fragile are the band’s much-liked rock anthems, ranging from the hyper-distorted title track, through the famous but far more timid song “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet.” Continue reading “Bachman-Turner Overdrive – Not Fragile (1974) [2021, Remastered, WEB Hi-Res]”

Considered by Piazzolla to be his best work, 1986’s Tango Zero Hour was the culmination of a career that began in Argentina in the 1930s. Piazzolla started out auspiciously enough working with one of the brightest lights of the classic tango era, singer Carlos Gardél. After Gardél’s tragic death in 1935 (by turning down an offer to tour with the singer at the age of 13, Piazzolla amazingly avoided the plane crash that killed Gardél), Piazzolla went on to perfect his bandoneón playing in various tango bands during the ’40s and ’50s, eventually studying with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. It seems hard to believe now, but at the beginning of 2003, it appeared that underdog Kelly Rowland might usurp her fellow Destiny’s Child member Beyoncé in the solo career stakes, having scored a U.S. chart-topper and a U.K. number one album shortly after her bandmate’s Austin Powers-related “Work It Out” failed to even make it into the Billboard Hot 100. Instrumental album from the iconic guitarist and former Dokken member. The album features nine brand new tracks and three bonus tracks from Lynch who is backed by drummer Jimmy D’Anda and bassist Eric Loiselle. From the driving guitar riff of album opener “Quiver” to the haunting outro of album closer “Falling Apart,” it is clear George Lynch was looking to explore his writing and love for the guitar. Songs like “Cola,” “Sharks With Laser Beams,” and “Supersonic Hypnotic Groove Thing” explore the various musical styles George likes to play while giving him room to experiment with new sounds alongside his signature tone. After Peter Gabriel departed for a solo career, Genesis embarked on a long journey to find a replacement, only to wind back around to their drummer, Phil Collins, as a replacement. With Collins as their new frontman, the band decided not to pursue the stylish, jagged postmodernism of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway — a move that Gabriel would do in his solo career — and instead returned to the English eccentricity of Selling England by the Pound for its next effort Continue reading “Genesis – A Trick Of The Tail (1976) [1981, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

After a 14-year absence from Memphis, Elvis Presley returned to cut what was certainly his greatest album (or, at least, a tie effort with his RCA debut LP from early 1956). The fact that From Elvis in Memphis came out as well as it did is something of a surprise, in retrospect — Presley had a backlog of songs he genuinely liked that he wanted to record and had heard some newer soul material that also attracted him, and none of it resembled the material that he’d been cutting since his last non-soundtrack album Continue reading “Elvis Presley – From Elvis In Memphis (1969) [1981, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

Queen guitarist Brian May’s first complete attempt at a solo album, Back to the Light, focuses on the hard rock sound that Queen often abandoned in the 1980s. While obviously sounding similar to some of the work by his former band, May’s path is far more hard-edged and emotionally punched than the majority of Queen’s work. His vocals are sometimes weak for a singer, but they also add a certain tenderness that most hard rock frontmen seem to lack. Cat Stevens tends to be lumped in with the early-’70s singer-songwriter school led by James Taylor and Carole King, but he actually fits in rather neatly with such wistful English contemporaries as Nick Drake, Syd Barrett, and Donovan. Tea for the Tillerman’s “Wild World,” “Into White,” and “Longer Boats” indicate that he may have been a more gifted tunesmith than the lot of them. As with the best of the Brit folk-rockers, Stevens mixed melancholy with whimsy. Yes, he was prone to airy platitudes, but when he harnessed his eccentricities, as he did throughout this 1970 masterwork Continue reading “Cat Stevens – Tea For The Tillerman (1970) [1980, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”
