Various Artists - Hey! That's My Song (2016)

Of course you already know these songs – all these songs; but maybe not these versions. It’s as if someone broke into your house while you were out and re-arranged the furniture. Continue reading “Various Artists – Hey! That’s My Song (2016)”

The Band – Stage Fright (1970) [1994, DCC Remastered]

The Band - Stage Fright (1970) [1994, DCC Remastered]

Stage Fright, the Band’s third album, sounded on its surface like the group’s first two releases, Music from Big Pink and The Band, employing the same dense arrangements with their mixture of a deep bottom formed by drummer Levon Helm and bassist Rick Danko, penetrating guitar work by Robbie Robertson, and the varied keyboard work of pianist Richard Manuel and organist Garth Hudson, with Helm, Danko, and Manuel’s vocals on top. Santana – Africa Speaks (2019)

Santana - Africa Speaks (2019)

No matter the numerous musical terrains Santana have traversed since the late 1960s, their trademark Afro-Latin sound is so recognizable it often dominates the band’s material. Not here; on Africa Speaks that sound is just one among many — some tunes here are almost unrecognizable as Santana). Produced by Rick Rubin, Africa Speaks was compiled from a whopping 49 songs, all recorded over ten days at Shangri-La in Malibu — many in a single take — most inspired by African melodies and polyrhythms. Paul Revere & Raiders – The Legend of Paul Revere (1990)

Paul Revere & Raiders - The Legend of Paul Revere (1990)

This double-CD set presents a real conundrum, on a lot of levels. For starters, on its face, 55 songs may well seem like overkill to the casual fan who only knows or remembers (or thinks they only remember) five or six big hits by Paul Revere & the Raiders. And there are more modest single-CD collections to be found on this band that seem less daunting Continue reading “Paul Revere & Raiders – The Legend of Paul Revere (1990)”

George Thorogood & The Destroyers – Greatest Hits: 30 Years Of Rock (2004)

George Thorogood & The Destroyers - Greatest Hits: 30 Years Of Rock (2004)

Released to celebrate the 30th anniversary of George Thorogood & the Destroyers — their first album may not have come out until 1977, but they cut their first sessions in 1974 — Capitol’s Greatest Hits: 30 Years of Rock was designed to replace 1992’s The Baddest of George Thorogood and the Destroyers as the band’s definitive single-disc overview. Considering that the 1992 disc is out of print (as is the exhaustive and exhausting 1997 double-disc set Anthology), this does indeed stand as the best compilation currently in print Continue reading “George Thorogood & The Destroyers – Greatest Hits: 30 Years Of Rock (2004)”

Peter Green – The Very Best Of Peter Green (1998)

Peter Green - The Very Best Of Peter Green (1998)

Peter Green is regarded by some fans as the greatest white blues guitarist ever, Eric Clapton notwithstanding. Born Peter Greenbaum but calling himself Peter Green by age 15, he grew up in London’s working-class East End. Green’s early musical influences were Hank Marvin of the Shadows, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Freddie King Continue reading “Peter Green – The Very Best Of Peter Green (1998)”

The Zombies – The EP Collection (1992)

The Zombies - The EP Collection (1992)

Excellent collection of Zombies EPs from 1964 to 1966. Most Americans got turned on to The Zombies after they’d already broken up, via the belated US release of “Time Of The Season.” Casual fans know “Time…,” “She’s Not There” (in both mono and stereo here) and “Tell Her No” Continue reading “The Zombies – The EP Collection (1992)”

Donovan – Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976 (1992)

Donovan - Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976 (1992)

While by no means a complete retrospective, this two-disc compilation contains a healthy sampling from Donovan’s first dozen years as a formidable musical figure. His chameleon-like sensibilities not only adapted to, but likewise defined the ’60s folk, pop, acid rock and the scene of swingin’ London. As well as hitting some of the more obvious high points, Donovan — who personally oversaw the project — included a couple of unissued demos (“London Town”/”Codine”), alternate versions (“Museum”/”Superlungs”/”Riki Tiki Tavi”) and previously unearthed titles (“Breezes Of Patchulie”/”Age Of Treason”/”What The Soul Desires”) Continue reading “Donovan – Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976 (1992)”

Deep Purple - Live In Long Beach 1971 (2015)

Rick Wakeman – Rick Wakeman’s Greatest Hits (1994)

Rick Wakeman - Rick Wakeman's Greatest Hits (1994)

This Greatest Hits double-disc release is both utterly deceiving and painfully disappointing, since its tracks are made up of fabricated instrumental pieces of Rick Wakeman’s album cuts. Played by Wakeman, the songs are glossed-over remakes that may be true to their original note form, but are not the actual tracks from their previously released albums. Coming off like synthesized Muzak, popular favorites such as “Merlin the Magician,” “The Journey,” and Yes’ “Starship Trooper” lack depth, color, or energy, with only their familiar rhythms and melodies remaining Continue reading “Rick Wakeman – Rick Wakeman’s Greatest Hits (1994)”

Papa Roach – F.E.A.R. (2015) [Japanese SHM-CD Edition]

Papa Roach - F.E.A.R. (2015) [Japanese SHM-CD Edition]

The ninth studio album from California’s Papa Roach, 2015’s F.E.A.R. finds the journeyman hard rock outfit delivering more of its bombastic, high-energy sound. F.E.A.R. was produced by Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne, Five Finger Death Punch) with assistance from his son Kane Churko, and the album’s title is an acronym that stands for “Face Everything And Rise.” The dark, aggressive irony behind this sentiment remains Continue reading “Papa Roach – F.E.A.R.
