Blackout was Scorpions’ first highly successful album, due to its clever balance of pop/rock (the title track), power ballads (“When the Smoke Is Going Down”), and catchy heavy metal (“Dynamite,” “No One Like You”). Vocalist Klaus Meine had a throat operation prior to the record’s release, and surprisingly, his voice sounds more melodic and lively than ever. This is the album that made Harry Belafonte’s career. Up to this point, calypso had only been a part of Belafonte’s focus in his recordings of folk music styles. But with this landmark album, calypso not only became tattooed to Belafonte permanently; it had a revolutionary effect on folk music in the 1950s and ’60s Continue reading “Harry Belafonte – Calypso (1956) [2013, Audio Fidelity Remastered, CD-Layer + Hi-Res SACD Rip]”

In the decades since its original release, more than one writer has declared Fairport Convention’s Liege & Lief the definitive British folk-rock album, a distinction it holds at least in part because it grants equal importance to all three parts of that formula. Moya Brennan’s work away from Clannad has always suffered under the weight of comparisons to her sister, Enya. After his stint with Jethro Tull and as the wave of new romantic pop groups were taking control of the airwaves, Eddie Jobson entered the studio to record his first solo album, known as Zinc, although it was meant to be titled “The Green Album” and billed to the band name “Zinc” — the record company messed things up quite a bit. There’s something exciting about the first album of a band that goes on to greatness, and The Pentangle, by the group of the same name, is no different. Here, the listener witnesses the first studio work of a band struggling to get their essence down on vinyl. Of course Bert Jansch and John Renbourn’s reputations as guitarists preceded the band, but the addition of bassist Danny Thompson and drummer Terry Cox gave the band an acoustic rhythm section like no other folk-rock group. John Barry’s sensitive score to the 1982 biopic Frances harkens back to the Hollywood golden era that launched the film’s subject, doomed actress Frances Farmer (played onscreen by Jessica Lange). Its simple yet sumptuous melodies evoke the classic melodramas of decades past, albeit informed with an emotional depth rarely achieved in the infancy of the sound era. John Barry’s fifth Oscar-winning score is a profoundly moving body of music, generally (though not entirely) elegiac in tone, very much like the movie for which it was written. It’s also a bit of a mixed bag, occasionally falling back on material that will be familiar to fans of the James Bond movies that Barry scored during the early- to mid-’60s. Along with the two subsequent “encore” volumes, Live at Keystone includes performances drawn from the quartet’s July 10-11, 1973, run in the intimate confines of Keystone Korners in Berkeley.
