Carl Cleves and Parissa Bouas are a duo from Australia whose fame Down Under is considerable. Their album on Stockfisch is called “Out of Australia”; while these three words certainly bear no small resemblance to the famous “Out of Africa”, you don’t have to be exactly a linguist to deduce that “Out of” is the trademark of an intensely emotional liaison with a country. Coleman Hawkins’ 1957 session for Riverside, aside from an oral documentary record in a short-lived series, was his only recording for the label under his name. Yet producer Orrin Keepnews had the good sense to invite the legendary tenor saxophonist to pick his own musicians, and Hawkins surprised him by asking for young boppers J.J. Blood, Sweat & Tears had a hard act to follow in recording their third album. Nevertheless, BS&T constructed a convincing, if not quite as impressive, companion to their previous hit.
