Joni Mitchell reached her commercial high point with Court and Spark, a remarkably deft fusion of folk, pop, and jazz which stands as her best-selling work to date. While as unified and insightful as Blue, the album — a concept record exploring the roles of honesty and trust in relationships, romantic and otherwise — moves away from confessional songwriting into evocative character studies Continue reading “Joni Mitchell – Court And Spark (1974) [1980, Nautilus Remaster, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

Easy Rider was the surprise box-office hit of the summer of 1969, a low-budget film about a couple of hippies who use their profits from a drug deal to drive their motorcycles across the Southwest and attend New Orleans’ Mardi Gras celebrations, encountering adventures and tragedy along the way. You see it over and over in the annals of record collecting. Some marketing whiz in the front office has an idea to cash in on a fad by releasing ‘product’ as quickly as possible. But the artist(s) hired for the project decide not to phone it in, and take things in a direction all their own. The result: a weirdly wonderful collision of the commercial and creative prized by crate diggers across the globe. Such an album is Milton Delugg & His Orchestra’s Music for Monsters, Munsters, Mummies & Other TV Fiends. Recorded in 1964, at a time when commercial TV saw no less than three comedy series (The Munsters, The Addams Family, and Bewitched) featuring supernatural/horror themes make their network premieres Continue reading “Milton DeLugg And His Orchestra – Music For Monsters, Munsters, Mummies & Other TV Fiends (1964) [2019, Limited Edition, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

Although this hit soundtrack was recorded with cheap ’70s synthesizers, the simple scores composed by John Carpenter are acclaimed masterpieces. Carpenter sets the mood for his horrific movie with such tracks as “The Shape Stalks,” “Laurie’s Theme,” and, of course, his main theme, which consists of the beating out of a 5-4 rhythm. A definite first pick for those interested, this soundtrack even bests most scary music albums. In 1972, Jethro Tull released the instant classic, ‘Thick As A Brick’. 50 years on and the album is still revered as one of rock’s and progressive rock’s most definitive and pioneering albums. To celebrate the 50th anniversary, ‘Thick As A Brick’ has been reproduced in its original format, the legendary 12-page newspaper. The vinyl is a half-speed master of Steven Wilson’s 2012 remix. Unlike any other records on the market, the album is set inside a broadsheet newspaper, ‘The St. Cleve Chronicle & Linwell Advertiser’. The newspaper includes many news articles packed full of continuing jokes, a crossword, connect-the-dots and much more. The surprise hit of the 1994 summer movie season traces the life of a half-wit through the major historical events of the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, and this soundtrack album is a travelogue of the same period, from Elvis Presley’s 1956 hit “Hound Dog” to Bob Seger’s 1980 hit “Against the Wind.” Like the movie, the soundtrack to Forrest Gump succeeds at repackaging the familiar Continue reading “Various Artists – Forrest Gump The Soundtrack (1994) [2014, Limited Edition, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”
