After Peter Gabriel departed for a solo career, Genesis embarked on a long journey to find a replacement, only to wind back around to their drummer, Phil Collins, as a replacement. With Collins as their new frontman, the band decided not to pursue the stylish, jagged postmodernism of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway — a move that Gabriel would do in his solo career — and instead returned to the English eccentricity of Selling England by the Pound for its next effort Continue reading “Genesis – A Trick Of The Tail (1976) [1981, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

After a 14-year absence from Memphis, Elvis Presley returned to cut what was certainly his greatest album (or, at least, a tie effort with his RCA debut LP from early 1956). The fact that From Elvis in Memphis came out as well as it did is something of a surprise, in retrospect — Presley had a backlog of songs he genuinely liked that he wanted to record and had heard some newer soul material that also attracted him, and none of it resembled the material that he’d been cutting since his last non-soundtrack album Continue reading “Elvis Presley – From Elvis In Memphis (1969) [1981, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

One of the seminal documents of the progressive rock era, a record that made its way into the collections of millions of high-school kids who never heard of Modest Mussorgsky and knew nothing of Russia’s Nationalist “Five.” It does some violence to Mussorgsky, but Pictures at an Exhibition is also the most energetic and well-realized live release in Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s catalog, and it makes a fairly compelling case for adapting classical pieces in this way. Let’s Dance is the 15th studio album by English singer-songwriter David Bowie, released on 14 April 1983 by EMI America Records. After the release of Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) (1980), Bowie began a period of numerous musical collaborations and film appearances. During this time, he also left RCA Records due to dissatisfaction. After signing with EMI America in late 1982, Bowie decided he wanted a fresh start, and chose Nile Rodgers of the rock/disco band Chic to co-produce his next record. Cat Stevens tends to be lumped in with the early-’70s singer-songwriter school led by James Taylor and Carole King, but he actually fits in rather neatly with such wistful English contemporaries as Nick Drake, Syd Barrett, and Donovan. Tea for the Tillerman’s “Wild World,” “Into White,” and “Longer Boats” indicate that he may have been a more gifted tunesmith than the lot of them. As with the best of the Brit folk-rockers, Stevens mixed melancholy with whimsy. Yes, he was prone to airy platitudes, but when he harnessed his eccentricities, as he did throughout this 1970 masterwork Continue reading “Cat Stevens – Tea For The Tillerman (1970) [1980, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

Country Joe (Joseph Allen) McDonald is an American musician from the 60s’ psychedelic rock group Country Joe and the Fish. Since the breakup of his group in 1971, McDonald continued to convey his political and ecological views through his music. This 1975 album, which includes the anthemic tune “Save the Whales!”, reflected an increase in McDonald’s ecological commitment, and features former Fish Bruce Barthol and ex-Instant Action Jug Band member Phil Marsh. Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town is a transitional effort that bridges the curveballs of Emmylou Harris’ earliest solo work with the more traditional country albums that comprise the bulk of the second phase of her career. For the first time, she covers no Gram Parsons tunes or pop music chestnuts, relying instead on newly exited Hot Band member Rodney Crowell for two songs (“Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight” and “I Ain’t Living Long Like This”) and Dolly Parton for another (the devastating “To Daddy”); the highlight is a gorgeous cover of Jesse Winchester’s “Defying Gravity.” Continue reading “Emmylou Harris – Quarter Moon In A Ten Cent Town (1978) [1979, MFSL Remastered, CD-Quality + Hi-Res Vinyl Rip]”

This is a particularly interesting release because it features the 1978 version of Manhattan Transfer performing at three different concerts. This is how the ensemble sounded live when Laurel Masse was still in the lineup along with Tim Hauser, Janis Siegel and Alan Paul. The pacesetting vocal group (accompanied by a quintet that includes guitarist Wayne Johnson and Don Roberts on reeds) runs through 18 songs, many of which are quite brief. Back in 1978 when this set was recorded, fusion (the mixture of jazz improvisation with rock rhythms) was declining. Keyboardist Joe Sample, best-known for his work with the Crusaders, was in the process of being one of the founders of “contemporary jazz,” an idiom that has since solidified into smooth jazz. Sample emphasized catchy melodies, light funk rhythms, appealing chord changes and a pop sensibility.
