Culled from several shows taking place in the Pacific Northwest on summer tours of 1973 and 1974, Believe It if You Need It zeroes in on the Grateful Dead in a particularly playful and comfortable phase, with the Deadhead-populated region and the Dead’s first taste of financial success giving their playing in this time a more carefree fluidity. Certainly by 1973, they had come a long way from their hand-to-mouth beginnings, establishing their own label, touring with an over-the-top sound system, and showing up to larger crowds every year. The Grateful Dead made their reputation on the road with their live shows, and they always struggled to capture that magic in the studio. From the Mars Hotel, while not a classic, represents one of their better studio albums. Jerry Garcia sounds engaged throughout and takes the vocal reigns for most of the songs on the album — although he’s not the most gifted vocalist, he proves himself able and versatile. Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead (1970) [2001, Reissue, DVD-Audio + Hi-Res]

As the ’60s drew to a close, it was a heavy time for the quickly crumbling hippie movement that had reached its apex just a few years earlier in 1967’s Summer of Love. Death and violence were pervasive in the form of the Manson murders, fatalities at the Altamont concert, and the ongoing loss of young lives in Vietnam despite the best efforts of anti-war activists and peace-seeking protesters. The Grateful Dead are proud to re-release their third studio album. The album features both of its official mixes, the 1969 original mix, and the 1971 remix on disc 1, which was overseen by Phil Lesh and Jerry Garcia. The original 1969 mix had been lost for decades before turning up in the early 2000s, and we’re thrilled to include it here on CD for the first time, along with its more well-known 1971 remix. The differences in the mixes at times are subtle and nuanced, and at others are glaring and dramatic, and it’s incredibly fun to contrast and compare.
