Ben E. King’s third album is a little short in running time but very high in quality, in terms of the dozen songs here. The title track was the selling point, but couldn’t help but be seduced by the exquisite production of “Ecstasy” and “On the Horizon,” the latter making about as fine use of harps and an ethereal chorus as one imagines possible — and when the strings come in, violins and cellos alternately, the sheer beauty of the track just overflows. “Show Me the Way to Your Heart” isn’t too far behind Continue reading “Ben E. “With her band Heart, Nancy Wilson has recorded 16 albums and sold over 35 million albums worldwide. Within that history-making career, You and Me represents something special, as it is Nancy Wilson’s very first solo studio album. The title track ‘You and Me,’ as with several of the songs on the album, reunites Wilson with longtime collaborator Sue Ennis, who co-wrote many of Heart’s classics with Nancy, and sister Ann. ‘You and Me’ highlights the intimate feel of the album. In his old age, Van Morrison dispensed with any lingering niceties he harbored, favoring bluntness over poetry. That transition is made plain by the title Latest Record Project, Vol. 1, a literal description of the album if not its contents. Latest Record Project, Vol. 1 is indeed Morrison’s latest record project as of 2021 — it’s called “Vol. 1” because he recorded more than enough to fill a second volume, a remarkable feat considering that this album contains 28 tracks and runs well over two hours Continue reading “Van Morrison – Latest Record Project: Volume 1 (2021) [Hi-Res] [Official Digital Release]”

The Battle at Garden’s Gate is the kind of album title that accurately reflects the contents within. Greta Van Fleet isn’t much concerned with the modern world, preferring to live in a fantasy of their own creation, one cobbled together with ideas learned from old albums from Led Zeppelin, Rush, and Styx. The second of Willie Nelson’s Frank Sinatra tributes — records that belong on the same continuum as Stardust yet are their own distinct thing — That’s Life is a jauntier affair than My Way. Where that 2018 record never quite wallowed in melancholy, it seems like a saloon album compared to That’s Life, an LP that tends to lean into the swinging side of Sinatra so much, it can almost seem like a tip of the hat to the Chairman of the Board’s stature as king of Las Vegas. History shows us there are plenty of bands where the whole is more than the sum of the parts, and Neil Young & Crazy Horse are a great example of how the right combination of musicians can create a tide that lifts all boats. Though Crazy Horse never do anything especially complicated, the loose but thoroughly deep groove they generate fits Young’s musical ideas better than nearly any of his collaborators Continue reading “Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Way Down In The Rust Bucket (2021) [CD-Quality + Hi-Res] [Official Digital Release]”
