Pop culture, comedic satire, and rock music have always made for strange bedfellows. With all due respect to the collective genius involved in the Spinal Tap saga, it is safe to say no other artists have been able to repeat or re-create the delicate balance exhibited in the Rutles’ multimedia parody. This venture included a made-for-television mockumentary titled All You Need Is Cash. On this 1990 CD release, the contents of the original 1978 soundtrack — which incidentally bore the same name as the show — are included, as are an additional half-dozen recordings made for the film, but ultimately became victims of the time limitations inherent in the vinyl medium. Leonard Cohen – Thanks For The Dance (2019)

Leonard Cohen - Thanks For The Dance (2019)

When Leonard Cohen sang “I was born like this, I had no choice/I was born with the gift of a golden voice” in his song “Tower of Song” in 1988, most people took it as a self-deprecating joke. No one regarded him as one of the great vocalists of his generation when he released his first albums in the late ’60s, given the dour, sometimes flat tone of his delivery. Simply Red – Big Love: Greatest Hits Edition (2015) [30th Anniversary, 2CD]

Simply Red - Big Love: Greatest Hits Edition (2015) [30th Anniversary, 2CD]

Mick Hucknall and Simply Red are rightly inseparable in the minds of most listeners — he is the frontman and the star, the one constant in the band’s history — but the singer’s short-lived solo career of 2008-2012 proved there was a difference between Hucknall and the group. Big Love, the album the reunited Simply Red recorded to celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2015, isn’t as in thrall to the past as the vocalist’s two albums of covers, nor is it as comfortable with rock as 2007’s Stay. Bridge Over Troubled Water was one of the biggest-selling albums of its decade, and it hasn’t fallen too far down on the list in years since.
