A great overview of the music from this group, one of the founders of the California sound in the late ’60s. This is a good collection of their unforgettable electric folk-pop songs, including “Monday, Monday” and “California Dreamin’.” (Originally released in August 1969 by Dunhill Records, 16 of Their Greatest Hits, it was reissued on CD by MCA Records in 1986.) For all but the completists, this anthology should more than suffice as an apt compact-disc retrospective of Canned Heat’s releases on Liberty Records. To that end, it’s a more or less chronological overview of the combo’s LPs, commencing with a trio of tunes from a spring 1967 studio session that predates their self-titled debut (1967). Hopes and Fears is the debut studio album by the English alternative rock band Keane. It was released on 10 May 2004 in the United Kingdom and topped the UK Albums Chart upon release. It was the second best-selling British album of 2004, behind the Scissor Sisters’ self-titled debut album, and has since been certified 9× Platinum by the BPI. The album returned to the top of the charts after winning a Brit Award for Best Album in February 2005. Continue reading “Keane – Hopes And Fears (2004) [2009, Deluxe Edition]”

Scottish whiskey-voiced vocalist Frankie Miller never made much of a splash in the States, despite, or perhaps because of, his fixation on American soul and R&B. Yanks have never been terribly appreciative of the music that originated in their homeland, which might have been a contributing factor to Miller’s marginal popularity in the U.S. He was a fairly major star in the U.K., though, big enough for EMI to remaster, repackage, and reissue his catalog (at least for the titles on their Chrysalis imprint) into this generous four-disc box. Because more than half of the 35 songs on this two-disc retrospective of Marianne Faithfull’s 1979-95 output come from her three great albums — Broken English, Dangerous Acquaintances, and Strange Weather — or are previously unreleased outtakes or B-sides from them, A Perfect Stranger: The Island Anthology makes a fine primer to Faithfull’s often challenging, always mesmerizing (or would that be always challenging, often mesmerizing?) music. “Ballad of the Soldier’s Wife,” her solid contribution to 1985’s Lost in the Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill, is also included, giving Faithfull’s hauntingly tragic voice the resonance and attention it demands. Elephant Mountain (1969) is the Youngbloods’ third long-player and marks their debut as a trio — featuring Jesse Colin Young (bass/guitar/vocals), Joe Bauer (drums), and Lowell “Banana” Levinger (keyboards) — after the departure of co-founder Jerry Corbitt (guitar/vocals). Although the band initially formed out of the early ’60s Northeast folk scene, by the time this set was issued they had relocated to the pastoral Northern California county of Marin. After rushing their second album Don’t Look Back, Boston took eight years to complete the album Third Stage. The long delay is even more surprising considering that their sound didn’t change at all; even though only songwriter/guitarist Tom Scholz and vocalist Brad Delp remained from the original lineup, they were the ones responsible for Boston’s sound. As such, it is difficult to avoid comparisons with their landmark debut. Continue reading “Boston – Third Stage (1986) [1993, MFSL Remastered]”
